340 engine worth?

What is a fair value for a 1970 340 engine that is locked up. I want to sell it and was thinking of having it rebuilt to find out if it is good but wonder if that makes sense. I am open to opinions on what to do. Thanks.
 
I'll give you $150 for it!

In all seriousness. There's about a million threads on this subject already. Short answer? It's worth what someone will pay for it. Like all things.
 
Locked up motor 50 to 100. If you take it apart and can verify that internal parts are salvagable aka a rod is not smashed through the inside of the block or there is not so much rust on a .060 over bore that the block is junk . 300 or more for known good core that is standard bore to .030. At 50 to 100 dollars it is a gamble. You may be getting a good rebuildable core or a boat anchor. If it comes with the intake figure 150 as you could sell the intake for that if the rest of the motor is junk.
 
where you at ?? tear it down , stock forged crank , clened and magged , inPtected , X heads with or without , mabee a d-1 I got 500$ after my engine builder looks at it , if your within 3 hours of Madison wisc. I pay fuel for tripp. pm me no more than .030 over oem .ooo crank its my new 427 Stroker10 k later or trade my engine + no carb or valve covers + 8.5 k to cover my build 600.00 if in gr8 shape and tanked and magged
 
I will take the chance on taking it to an engine builder and find out if it is good. Thanks for all the opinions.

was and is a perfect running motor.
standard bore.

Doesn't mean it's not worth a grand.340's and hemis have their own following, just gotta find the right guy

I just purchased a 340 for $1500. I think I got a deal. Big difference between today and 2004!
This 340 stroked bored to 414. Gonna have a hot rod this b day! Seventy one.
 
Ill bite: $400. Unlock it and ask $800. I sold a 60 over O-ringed 340 short block for $400. Was a nitrous motor so the pistons were spotless. I got it in a trade so I never ran it but did take the caps off and check the bearing clearances and it was right on with no new bore taper or wear.

Put it back together with a "Freshen Up". Clean everything up and a gasket kit. If it was running perfectly before, that should be plenty. Paint it and sell it for $2,000. Should be able to do that in one weekend. A lot of people are very hesitant to buy an engine that is all apart unless they can get it really cheap.
 
I just bought a running 68 340 for $750. People in Hawaii are only interested in Chevys and Fords.
 
I have a 340 block crank and heads laying around. I sent the crank out for regrind, it needed it. I am scrounging up other things that I didnt have ,rods, pistons, pushrods, rockers and shafts. A cam, untill all said and done I will have a grand or dern near into it, and that is counting the machine work and scrounging missing parts. I would say if it is a rebuildable core and everything is there from valve covers, intake, to oil pan ,a grand is being conservative. It may be worth more IMO. It depends on who is buying, how much they want a 340. There are those that swear by 273s 318s and 360s etc. 340 is more rare only made 5 years and the first three years are the good ones :)
