While answering a post a minute ago I was reminded how I learned the hard way about killing an otherwise good 727 one cold winter morning when I was a teen back in the 70s. We had an very good running 383 HP in a 70 Chrysler Town & Country station wagon. I fired it up that morning and let it run a bit but when I put it in gear nothing. Being the dumb kid I was I just revved it a little and still nothing.... The original configuration of the valve body does not pump fluid through the system in park. If I had put the car in neutral and let it run before putting it in gear the thing would not have fried the rear band and other parts. My B-350 Plymouth has a lazy 727 that doesn't get a lot of miles so every time I fire it up I always let it run in neutral for a minute and that makes it happy. I try and upgrade all of my torqueflites to the new style valve which does pump in park but a couple have not gotten attention yet. If you put it in gear and don't feel a solid hit then put it in neutral and run it a little then try again. It can very well save you hundreds of dollars!

That's the rear-clutch-welder spool valve!
Betcha!
Do not warm up the car for 15 min on a -20 f day, with one of these, unless you are prepared to go forward only.

I never knew that.....I have to wonder if my dad did anything like that with his '61, '64, or '67 C body Wagons....

The early cast iron transmissions also had a rear pump but I'm not sure how the fluid path went in park on those......

It sure has that Popular Mechanics "HEY, Dad" artwork thing going on!
I never was too bothered about waiting for a converter to pump up.
Not nearly as much as I was having a rear clutch pack weld stuck.

All the newer shift kits have the upgraded spool valve. The last TF-3 kit I had did.

Are you in some sun-blessed clime?
It would make sense if you never saw sub-zero.
