Clutch fan question

Do you have a shroud? Because you may want to make sure a 18" fan will clear the shroud. I use a 67 shroud in my 68, and I had to go with 17" fan because an 18" incher didn't leave enough space around the circumference.

FWIW- I use a 17117 derale fan with a 2747 hd hayden clutch that hayden put a shorter jag-style 2765 shaft on. It cools great. Don't spend big bucks on a pre-assembled kit when you can buy them seperate for around $30-$40 each respectively (fan and clutch).

Did you have to use a spacer? If so which one? Mine did not have a spacer just 7 blade aluminum fan and fan clutch bolted directly to front of water pump pulley

No, I didn't use a spacer. Space it pretty tight in mine with the Champion radiator. I couldn't even fit the standard 2765 hd clutch on it. You shouldn't need a spacer when using a clutch fan. How much room do you have between the waterpump and radiator? How big is the fan opening in the shroud?

I will picture my setup later with the original metal 2 piece shroud, 7 blade 17" fan, and the clutch mechanism I used!! I have a few extra 17" 6 and 7 blade fans for early A cars if you need one!!

I do not have a shroud for my car it is missing. Space about 3 3/4" from front of pulley to back of radiator.

Yes that would be awesome to see the setup. And yes I would be interested in a correct 7 blade fan and the type of clutch you used. Thank you

The 2747 HD Hayden clutch is 3.34" high. So, you'd have about 7/16" clearance from the radiator with it. A little tight, but it may work if you limit the engine's forward movement. You wouldn't want that thing touching under hard braking. On the other hand, some folks use the 2765 Jag style clutch. That one is only 2.67" high. The only problem with that one is it's the standard duty clutch not designed to spin the heavier steel fan as Jags had plastic fans. Contact Hayden and they may be able to send you a prototype with the 2747 HD clutch and shorter 2765 shaft. Best of both worlds.

Here is my fan and clutch! The fan is an original 17" fan correct for early A body cars with the 2 piece shroud! I don't know where I got the clutch, but I did not buy it straight out of a store!! What I can do is mock up another correct fan, and I have another clutch around here, and make sure it fits, then send it along to you!!

Sounds good going to send you a private message for details.

Hey guys, been reading your cooling forum and not that I have an answer but I do have the same problem. Just put a shroud on the 67 Dart today and I think I might have made a little improvement but not enough.
Does anyone know what the correct clearance for fan to radiator and should the fan actually be inside the shroud?

I've heard to shoot for having the fan 1/2 way in the shroud. Not sure how much truth there is to that though. You'll probably get a million different answers.

1/2 Way in the shroud is o.k. why ? Because if the fan is completly inside the shroud...the fan will not pull enough air "OUT of the shroud..
so 1/2 way in resolves this...
Greetings Juergen
