So, long story short. I get the whirring sound of a bad wheel bearing and I know it's in the front end. So I buy both if them because it sounds like both sides are making noise. I replace the passenger side and the other side is still making noise. I replace the drivers side the next weekend and it's still making noise, but the noise seems to be coming from the passenger side. So I warranty the passenger side bearing and install the new one and it's still making noise! When I turn left the noise gets very quiet and almost gone. When I turn right the sound gets louder. So my question is. Is it possible to be having bad wheel bearings off the shelf? It's getting hard to narrow this down the sound went away seems like on the drivers side. Should I just get the really expensive bearings and see if that fixes my problem? I'm using masterpro O'Reilly house brand parts. I've never had an issue before until now.

Possible? Absolutely. Multiple bad bearings right off the shelf? Not likely.

How are you adjusting them? And, are you sure it's the wheel bearings? Starting to sound like its something else.

It's a hub assembly for a 07 dodge magnum. I started to suspect something else, but what else makes a whirring sound like a bad wheel bearing and stops when you turn left? Two wheel bearings in a row? Should I switched the sides and see if it changes? That's the only thing I can think of off hand.

I sell bearings everyday, wheel bearings included. The chance of having a bad wheel bearing is extremely low (depending on the quality, we sell Timken primarily for wheel bearings, the chance is next to zero). The chance of having two bad ones? Even if they are a chinese offshore? Next to zero. In fact not one of my wheel bearings has ever come back for any reason other than customer installed improperly. Something else is amiss, incorrect installation, or its some other part of the steering/hub assembly. I would start looking around it if you can. When you had it all apart did you notice any other oddly worn parts? Any odd wear pattern on the tires?

I assume you replaced both inner and outer bearings And bearing races ???? In tightening a tapered roller bearing a little too tight is worse than very slightly loose.
Yote

I replaced both of mine and the drivers side is making noise after 1500 miles , mine have the abs sensor built in them so they don't put much grease in them when there made there afraid it might mess up the sensor . the factory ones only went 70000 miles and now I'm on my 3rd set at 190000 miles I feel your pain brother.

More Grease (good grease) is better than just enough.

also might be bearing on rear end sometimes it sounds like it might be coming from front.

pvc valve? tires?

No, nothing arry at all. I know the tires make sound going down the road, but this sound is definitely a wheel bearing type sound. I don't see how you can **** up a wheel hub bearing install. It's pretty strait forward. Take the spindle nut off, take old wheel bearing assembly off, seat the new hub assembly, tighten the spindle nut back down to 180 ft lbs, done. I suppose I will check the rear bearings too. Not enough grease in them? I've never heard of that. I should repack them then?

180 FT? not sure how tight this is but sounds tighter than
finger tight. which is what i did- finger tight

#5 little loose is better and a little tight.

pack them good. i even pack the dust cap.

if your tires/wheels are maladjusted alignment, camber, toe, etc. it will make that noise too FYI . ask me how i know. haha

I don't think you read the post or any other part of the post. I've said hub assembly a few times already. I know how to assemble a tapered bearing and race. Tightening a tapered wheel bearing to 180ft lbs would be asinine. I'm not that stupid. So, one more time everyone. It's a WHEEL BEARING HUB ASSEMBLY we are talking about here.

? i'm out.
Thank you for pointing out the alignment possibility. Although I don't understand why a little toe in would make bearings go on the Fritz. Don't all cars have a slight toe in from the factory?

So no possibility of the bearings being bad off the shelf. Alright, well for the future readers I'm going to prove it right or wrong. Since I couldn't find a damn thing on Google search.

HIGHLY unlikely - unless it is being installed incorrectly.
which is asinine to even suggest . :poke:
Please take your antagonistic, underlying sarcasm somewhere else. You deem yourself cunning, however your playing a child's game. On a thread worthy note, it is unlikely multiples are found off the shelf bad, but still possible and I aim to prove or disprove my second bearing is bad off the shelf.

?

you know bearings are not a bank breaking investment better not to buy the generic O'rillies brand go for the best one.

there is a writer and a narrator.

these are straight forward replies its up to you to give them meaning and "cunning and underlying sarcasm" or not. im sorry you feel i am being this way.

maybe this is a case of poor attitude on your part?
or maybe you think your self on a high horse of sorts that some suggestions or advice you deem unworthy of your time? making you the player of the child's games. ?

thread worthy subject. Then use SEARCH button. for easy and quick answers.

Buying a more expensive bearing doesn't prove or disprove this one is bad from the get go. A less expensive bearing may or may not fail sooner than the expensive one, but it still shouldn't be bad off the shelf. Look, your not really producing anything positive here. So I'm just gonna ask that you quit replying. Leave space for people who might actually have some positive input pertaining to the overall question. If not, I'm just going to ignore you anyway.

how old are you kid?

earlier post i said i was out of here but you keep speaking to me.
Like I said, positive and contributing replies please. Thanks for understanding and not replying. I appreciate it.

Can you hear the noise if you rotate the unit bearing by hand or just when driving? Did you feel any roughness in bearing after removal?

The first one felt like the bearing race was pitted. After I spun it by hand, I replaced it with this new one and it makes the same sound but I haven't spun it by hand yet. I'm gonna check it out tonight.
