Wheel bearing bad off the shelf?

Can you hear the noise if you rotate the unit bearing by hand or just when driving? Did you feel any roughness in bearing after removal?

The first one felt like the bearing race was pitted. After I spun it by hand, I replaced it with this new one and it makes the same sound but I haven't spun it by hand yet. I'm gonna check it out tonight.
