I don't know much about this subject , so any advise is Great !
after a 20 mile drive yesterday I see a puddle under the trans - 1965 valiant 4 speed - Trying to determine where it was coming from I put it on stands , dried everything off , and ran it till it warmed up , then get back under and everything was dry except a small drip from the speedo cable , not at the trans , about 5 inches away. So is that a seal letting the fluid ride in the cable? or should there be some fluid in the cable , and the housing started to leak?

You can even fit two of them in there if the speedo gear shaft has a groove in it from the first seal.

That is a neat trick^^^. I usually leave the old one in there and add a new one on top of the old one.

Thanks Guys , is it easy to find the seals ? , and do I need to drain down trans to remove the cable from it?

No need to drain and if you check with a transmission shop I'm sure they will give/sell you one. Look for the oldest guy there and ask him..

A very small amount of fluid could come out. Less than a cup usually. Raise the rear of the car a little, and it'll be even less, or none at all.

OK so just cause I never took one of these apart , The seal is at the bottom of the plastic gear?

Guess I never looked in the end of my new gear. The seal is in the speedo housing and it seals on the outside of the shaft.

the seal was stuck down in the gear housing , sure are buggers to find new ones

The second one should stack right on top of the first one.
If not, then just replace the old one with the new.

Yes if you have room, which you should, stack the new on top. This way the new seal rides on a un-warn part of the speedo gear.

I'm glad you guys take the time to help us thick heads, so I put the old one back on the end of the cable , and the new one on top of it ?
