Hey all I have a built 360 in my barracuda with plans one day to upgrade back to a 383. The engine currently has a carter thermoquad on it and I would like something more performance oriented. I don't know much about carbs but I want my car to one day be a built daily driver, something that won't give me 5 mpg but at the same time if I give it some gas I want to go. The two question I have are one, if I get a carb for my 360 when I upgrade to a 383 can that carb transfer over. And two, what would someone with some more carb experience reccomend for a carb, that previously stated, does not give me horrible gas milage, but at the same time puts me in my seat. Thanks for all ideas and suggestions.

Well now you went and done it. You just pissed off the thermoquad fans. Actually they are not a bad choice and you can use it on your 383.

I didn't mean to lol. Everyone local has told me the one I have is just a junky stock one and to upgrade to something like a holley. Here's a picture of mine.

They can work really well with some tuning.
I would take the plug off the bowl vent to start with. Looks like you have a early model judging from the timed vacuum port.

Many a bar room brawl has been started over the subject of carburetors. There's nothing wrong with that TQ in the pic either.

What performance issues are you having?
Well I'm new to cars, just bought this and I'm trying to get it running and restored. I drove it once for about five minutes before I parked it and started working on restoring things and it just had nothing power wise. I had to floor it just to get it to go practically.

What is the timing set at?
I'm probably going to look like a jack but I have no idea. The previous owner built it for racing and didn't care about anything on the car and most everything has been Jerry rigged. Most of my time spent so far has been fixing everything. I'm only 19 and have very limited knowledge on cars, but I have been learning a lot from everyone here.

I see that you have a open plenum intake,
What transmission and gear are you running?

Start with timing, 12* would be a good place to start.

Do you have access to different carb?
Sounds like it will be a screamer once you get the carb /timing sorted out.

Do you have a timing light? Pulling the distributer towards you will advance the timing. How does it run with out a load?

Pedal/throttle linkage adjusted where it opens the secondary's?

If it's a carb option you want, I'd go with a 750 double pumper Holley means it's a 4 speed. Won't be the "best" mpg options, but it won't kill it either if you stay out of it.
However, if it's as dead as you say, it could be numerous things. I'd personally start with the simple tune up of plugs (plugs can tell ya a lot), plug wires, cap and rotor. If it's points, replace them too. Then I'd set the timing by moving the distributor. See what the best you can get it from this. IF the car continues to struggles to cross the street, that would be another conversation with another list of things to check, but I'd first eliminate the simple things.

Okay, any recommendations on what to use plug wise for a performance oriented build?

you'll get a dozen suggestions on plugs, but I've had great luck with RN12YC Champions
