12's from a 340 naturally aspirated.

This thread sure took a turn! After reading everyone's responses it would appear the 340 is one of the fastest small blocks ever offered. Yet, most people talk like it is just a motor for the resto-guys.

I disagree that it was one of the fastest motors ever. That's just not true.

Now, the 340 in an A body.......THAT was one of the fastest cars ever. That's how the 340 got its rep. In the A body.

I can name plenty of other faster, more powerful engines. The 430 Buick, 390 AMC, BOSS 351C, 425 Oldsmobile, 500 Cadillac. It's not the engine itself that garners the reputation. It's what it was IN that makes the legend.

I do agree though that the 340 was certainly a legendary small block........just like the original 370 HP 350 LT1, the 271 HP solid lifter 289, 365 HP 327, 375 HP 327.......I can go on and on.

The fact is, there were lots of legendary engines back then. Mopar lucked SLAM UP with the 340 A body package. THAT is what was legendary, the whole package.
