12's from a 340 naturally aspirated.

This thread sure took a turn! After reading everyone's responses it would appear the 340 is one of the fastest small blocks ever offered. Yet, most people talk like it is just a motor for the resto-guys.
The 340 is the most powerful small block motor produced by Chrysler in stock form up until the Magnum motors came out in 92. I don't know the horsepower at the crank of the Magnum 5.9. 340 id definitely most powerful carbureted small block from Chrysler in stock form. In stock form 340s were always performance motors. 360s were rarely performance motors.

The reason 340s are for the restoration crowd is because they are somewhat rare
and therfore expensive. When building non stock motors it is the same price or cheaper to build a 360. If you have a 340 already I would build it. If you are looking for your next hot rod motor to build it may be less expensive to buy and build the 360.
