Intake Manifold Question

So I am replacing my intake manifold gasket. Ordered a Fel-Pro 1213. Get to the point where I need to install it, it's missing a cutout for my exhaust port.

I'm assuming I got the wrong one for my 340 with x heads? Or do I need to cut it out? I wouldn't think I need to do this.
 
That would be my gasket choice. That exhaust crossover passage is there to heat the intake manifold for cold starts and cold weather. If you are using a stock type choke then you would probably want to use it. If not a cooler intake air/fuel charge makes more power, just look at an Eddy Performer RPM Air Gap manifold. It lacks that passage and blocks the crossover ports in the heat. I have been blocking that passage for decades.
 
I have an edlebrock 1406. So do I need to put a piece of metal in to block the port off or will the gasket do the job?
 
i have read that the heat cross over will give better mileage.
..idea being the heat will vaporize the raw gas for better mixing.

well here in calif we block them , do to the fuel boil out on the carbs . the heat transfors under the carb is okay for cold weather driving . but in the golden state the weather does not warrant it . so an electric choke does the warm up enough . took me many hour of hairpulling tuning to track it down . and now i'm bald , lol . well nearly . even with the blockoff passage a series of gasket n plates are used under the carb to help dump the heat so it won;t get to the carb . using a weber afb . found its better then the eddy's i've had . this was in my darts until it got dented to the frame sold it to a guy with a tee boned dart . the two made one great car again .

You can make a plate cut from an old baking pan from the wife's stash. Put the plate on the cylinder head side of the gasket, or some old furnace duct....really any thin sheet tin will work

Thanks for all the help. Installed it with just a gasket because I didn't see the responses. Will the burn through cause damage to anything other than the gasket?

First time I m doing this.

It seems like blocking the exhaust crossover might also help with heat soak issues that are mentioned when running edelbrock carbs even if a heat insulator gasket is installed? If running a 1406, wouldnt it be redundant having an electric choke and using the exhaust crossover to heat the carb up on cold starts? I'm wondering if I could get away with blocking off the exhaust crossover even though I live in the PNW (near Seattle as most people know where that is).
 
I blocked off the heat cross over in my Chrysler with an ld4b intake and 1405 eddy carb. Works great and less heat issues in summer. My Dart has an rpm air gap and 1406, works perfect without the heat cross over. I have cut a small piece of steel to shape and hi temp siliconed it in the hole of the intake gasket to block off the heat crossover with success as well.
 
Dog food can lid material under the gasket on the head side and you are good.

Depends how much you drive it in the fall/winter/spring seasons. If not much, I would block it. My car basically only comes out in the summer (read:dry!) season, so not a problem with blocked X-over.
 
if your running a stock exhaust manifold with heat riser even the metal block off will fail over time.
 
With a free-flowing exhaust system, and no heat riser, that gasket should not burn thru. If you have stock exhaust manifolds with the heat riser, you do not want to block that passage, and yes when the exhaust is being forced thru there by the heat riser it will eventually burn thru. Burn gasket will just end up going out the tailpipes.
 
Sorry to revive this dead thread but I need to install my intake again. Did a whole front end rebuild and cam swap.

Does anyone know if I can use a beer can aluminum to block the heat riser passage?
