I've decided to sell my 6.1L Hemi. I have it listed in the for sale mechanical parts section and I started out with it listed at $4800 and have lowered the price to $4200 but so far there haven't been any offers.

I originally bought the motor used, the person I bought it from assured me that it ran and was low mileage, based on the external condition I believed him. The few people that have expressed interest have asked if I've heard it run the honest answer is no at that point they disappear.

So here are my questions. Is my asking still too much high, I thought 48 was high but 42 was a very reasonable amount. Or is it the fact that they can't hear it run that scares them away? I really don't want to give the motor away.... what do you think of those inspection cameras from HF? Does inspecting the bores help? How about allowing the user to pull the oil pan?

Thanks,

Regards,

Joe Dokes

Pictures always help. I do not know if the inspection camera can take pictures or not.
Pulling the oil pan for some shots is a good idea.

a couple 6.1's brought some money a while back and now everybody thinks they are worth a fortune. if you look on ebay at completed auctions. they are not selling at the higher prices. the market sets the value! they are only worth what someone is willing to pay.. hell the 6.1 complete running gears, trans wiring fuel systems etc. on a pallet are 6-7k. how did you come up with your asking price?

What all is included, Joe? In my experience, the market is right around $4,000 for a complete running 6.1, so I think you're priced correctly. But having no first hand knowledge of hearing it run is a concern. Do you have leak down numbers? And you could pull a couple bearings to inspect for a serious buyer (just replace the bolts if you do of course).

Hopefully you have it listed on other sites as well? LXforums, modern Mopar forum, Craigslist, etc?

I think around the 4K mark is quite right for a second hand 6.1 in running condition. It's what I would pay.

Ok, I'm not trying to hurt feelings here, but this is my opinion. $4200 is alot for any engine that a guy assures me that a guy assured him that it's good. And I would still need the trans, electronic stuff, not an easy install. Have to be willing to modify the front suspension ,possibly going to a coil over setup for needing to cut up the trans tunnel and torsion bars anchors. Weighing all that, it would take someone with lots of time and money to get involved with a project like this.

The motor is complete with all accessories. No trans. I have a cable operated 85mm throttle body and adapter plate. Unfortunately I don't have the DBW throttle body. But I do have the factory computer.

I would be also be willing to pull the pan and valve covers for anyone interested.

And yes furyus2 4200 might be too much, and probably is, that's why I'm asking for advice. When I bought the motor 5k was a pretty std price, clearly they are lower now.

Any interest in selling the throttle body? Or partial trade on a stock 6.1 throttle body?

I bought my 6.1 NEW for $4,250 ; no accessories. It was a fair price but not particularly a great one. I later bought a new 6.1 bare block knowing they would become scarce. I went to sell the block when I was raising money for my Scat Pack purchase and practically had to give it away.

In talking with a notable late Hemi guru, he told me everyone wants either the Eagle 5.7 or the 392. In my view, the 6.1 is the best platform to hot rod, but according to the guru, not many other people feel that way. Everyone pretty much follows the hype of the later model engines.

It all gets down to how badly you want to move it out and accept your loss. Under the circumstance of unknown mileage or condition, I would put the price in the $3,500 - 3,750 area and think it would sell.

BTW, why are you selling it ?

Cuda,

I've dropped the price to $3500.00

I think I might have it priced right, I might drop it down to 3K just to move it.

As for why the sale, I realized that it was going to take a decade to finish the car. I just didn't have the money to move the project forward. Plus most of my hot rodding buddies have left the sport.

From just selling my transmission and other parts I've been able to buy a running jeep and go off roading, in an ideal world I'd do both.

I'd love to keep the motor and put it in the jeep and if it won't sell for a reasonable amount I might just sit on it.

the trouble I see is, most people, ' ME INCLUDED", don`t have the knowledge to get all the right parts, or how to make these things work in an older car, or anything that didn`t come w/ one in it . I`d like to have a 392 in my 02 quadcab , haven`t even heard about someone attempting things like that. I certainly don`t have the knowledge to do it !

Hey Paul

I think your asking price is about right now.

The hard part is people cant measure the bores..so thats an unknown.

The plus is that its a 6.1 - forged crank - no VVT to struggle with - MSD will read the tone ring...unlike the 392

SRT8Cuda is right...it IS the best G3 to 'hot rod' on a budget.

Good luck with your sale. :)

Most retrofit guys aren't going to use the harness or transmission so they don't really add much in the way of value. You probably don't want to put any more money into it, but you could buy one of the harness and ECU combinations, get the thing running on a stand and sell it as a package ready for someone to drop in.

I also reckon the 6.1 is the go for a retrofit motor, you don't have any of the complications of MDS or VCT of to deal with like the other engines and it has a half decent looking intake on it compared to the plastic jobs used elsewhere.
