I was under my duster today and I noticed an interesting wear pattern on the rear tires
the inside inch or so of the thread was worn more then the rest
what (other than smokey burnouts) would cause this, and should I be worried?

tires are old mickey Thompson N50-14 inflated to 32 PSI

Tread wear. If you see thread you and your tires are in trouble.

How wide are the rims?

2nd rib wear for bias ply tires is perfectly normal.

You're correct. A properly used rear tire will be tread-less evenly all the way across!

Kidding aside, if one was in and the other out, the diff could be out of align. I highly doubt you've Dukes of Hazarded your car so the diff shouldn't be bent. Perhaps just being old could have an effect on the wear.

The real answers came before I typed!

It does matter the width. 2nd rib tread wear is an inherent wear feature in bias ply tires. You cannot change it.

so this is normal wear for this type of tire?
(just want to make sure there is anything I'm missing)

You could also have to much air pressure. Draw a line across the tread with white shoe polish. Drive the car for a short distance. When the stripe is worn off in an even pattern you have the correct tire pressure.

I always thought if I had too much air pressure it would wear out the center of the threads first?

That's a good idea. I have found different tires don't always like the recommended pressure. Another one for the trick box.

I don't know how many times you want me to say it. Do you need a different language? YES 2nd rib tire wear on bias ply tires is normal.

Adjusting the air pressure will not cure it, but it may help a little. No matter what you do, that's the normal wear pattern.

no, I heard you the second time, I just figured I would post the picture to make sure you were thinking of what I was speaking off
(ill go read that article now)

You need new tires period!! :poke:

I cant afford new tires
because I run 14 inch wheels, no one makes decent tires in 14 inch so I would need to buy 15 inch wheels first
but no one makes 15X10 slotted mags in small bolt pattern so I would need to upgrade to large bolt pattern
so now I'm looking at a 2400 dollar price tag just so I can run new tires

Upgrading to the large bolt pattern would be a good idea. That would be a goal if I were you.

I got a feeling upgrading to large bolt pattern is kind of like when I went from my flip phone to a smart phone...bound to happen sooner or later but just not as "cool" as sticking with it
