I don't have my copy of the rule book in front of me and am wondering if I can but join a section of cage. If I internal sleeve and rosette weld, will that pass tech?
Is there any way to do this so it's passable or is this just a stupid idea?
Thanks.

I do not beleave it is acceptable even if you internal sleeve it......tech sees a butt weld and every one puts in a sleeve, just ask them, they will tell you.........

I COULD be wrong on this, but I've never heard it to be an acceptable move.

Get another length of pipe/tubing long enough that does not have to be but welded.

Dam, I was afraid of that...

The car ain't running sub 10's but I still want it to be safe...

I could be wrong but I believe it's legal if done correctly. My uncle had an 7.60 sec front engine dragster several years ago with a frame rail modified in much the same way- chrome moly frame rail butt welded with TIG with a sleeve and rosette welds on both sides and certed to 7.50. I believe the rulebook allows this in order to allow for evolving rules for older chassis. Again, this was a few years ago though, so I'm not sure about current rules. Anyone have a current rule book with official language?

Not only is it legal, but in some cases, actually required. SFI spec for area where front roll bar hoop joins upper frame rail on F/C and Dragsters chassis requires a splice with a rosette welded inner tube.

The HDK fab guys main business is building / repairing sprints . I have seen many a tore up sprint car in his shop that has been repaired that way.......some wrecked again and the repaired section appears stronger than the non repaired section.

If your chassis does not need to be certified it will pass. If it needs to be certified the inspector will look over the cage and then ultrasonicly check the thickness of the tubing. Either way you should be good. I have had enough certs done that the inspector knows where i live. No address needed. LOL.

Where are you wanting to put the splice? I believe it is acceptable as long as it is not within the actual cage. You can use this method on the forward bars or the rear bars but I do not believe it is acceptable within the cage itself.

I could sleeve the out side if it makes any difference?
Seeing as I'm not under 10 seconds, I could make the cage out of tin foil and tape, correct?

No!

Are you building a roll cage or a roll bar?

The sleeve needs to be inside the tube, not outside.

Have you read the nhra rule book?

I'm building a full cage, 12 point.
Yes, I have the 2016 NHRA book and have read it. It's just hard to understand some of their wording.

Looks like I will just remake that bar. The one I made was a little short.
Thanks for the advice.

My car is certified to 7.50 with 2 bars butt welded with internal sleeves . You need 2 rosetts top and bottom on both sides of the butt weld

But where are the butt joints? Are they within the cage or outside of the cage? I know they are legal but I thought they were not legal within the cage. For instance you couldnt splice an A-pillar bar/door bar/ dash bar etc. But you could splice a forward strut bar, rear strut bars or anything outside of the actual cage.

Whiitepunk- you work on nitro cars at some point (or currently)? May know you in real life- I was with JFR 2006-2011.

I ran with a bunch of east coast and Midwest cars back in the 80s and 90s. Partnered on a T/F car for a while, had my own F/A.
Building a Blown Nitro Belvedere Grudge car now

Just got back in town and had a chance to pull out my 2016 NHRA book. Butt joints ok. Must be rosette welded and tube must be same thickness as main tube.

I already remade the bar but thought I may as well post my finding.
