Are you sure that's what was said? Ask again. The theory is right about the chain relaxing a degree, but was this instead is what was said "the cam will retard its self a degree because of chain stretch and then the timing will become zero". The word retard placed in the wrong context and we've got a totally misunderstood meaning.
