The dash on my 68 Formula S had the radio section pretty much destroyed when I bought the car. Previous owner had the dash bezel redone, even though this section was bad, so it was in too good of shape to just start over.
Since the holes for the thumb knobs were gone, a factory delete plate wouldn't work. So I went to plan B. I had a piece of clear lexan purchased from a hobby store, so after a few measurements and careful cuts with a plywood blade in my radial arm saw, I had the beginnings of a radio delete plate.
Once cut to size to cover everything bad, which is larger than the factory delete plate, I rounded off the corners with sandpaper, and roughed up both sides so paint and adhesive would stick. I shot the front with Krylon dull aluminum paint, and used clear adhesive silicone to attach to the dash.
I know it's thinner than a factory plate, but I think it does the job very well and only cost a few bucks and a little time. The dull aluminum paint is almost a spot on match to the argent silver when the dash was redone.
