Maybe somebody can steer me straight, I have a 70 Duster with a 360 I don't know any specs of it other than it's supposed to have the 284/484 cam. It had 3.91 gears I took them out and put 3.23 for highway cruising. And I don't think it has a stall converter in it can anybody recommend one with that setup? Thanks

That should be discussed directly with the vendor of the converter, while you tell them exactly what you have and what you want out of it.
A compression test to determine a estimated cpmpression ratio would be a good idea before you talk to them.

Afraid of that was hoping someone had similar setup. Trying to find which would be easier and cheaper a cam swap or converter

ive got that cam in my 360 demon with 355s and hughes 3000 torque converter, with those gears you may want to do a cam swap. mine takes off pretty good, but for me that cam doesnt really start pulling til above 3000 rpm

Well I'm not worried about racing I love the sound of that cam but stop lights are not friendly. And I don't wanna burn anything up

yes, cam sound is nice, never mind the haters!i can idle down to 650 and no issues whatsoever at stoplight, so maybe a higher stall tc could be what you are lookin for. i swapped out my 284/484 this spring for a summit 6901, within 2 weeks i put ol lumpy back in!

that cam likes a 3.91-4.10 gear and a looser converter.. the right converter will wake that ***** up..

I have had that Camshaft in 3 motors. Pretty tame actually. It varied from 10:1 to 8:1 compression. I would not be certain that what you have is a 280.... I could never afford a converter back then. And I had 3:91's to 3:23's.

When you get a chance put a Vacuum Gauge on the motor and report back. As for the Converter though, Trailbeast is right in that you need to hash it out with your Converter company. In fact, if they don't know exactly what you have they may not be able to get you what fit's the build.

Thats almost exactly what I had in my old '71 Cuda 340 when I bought it, the .484 cam 3.55's and the old B&M Super Holeshot 3500, that worked great on the road, and car ran 13.3's all day long with 26" slicks. Guess its which is the lesser evil for you, gearbox off or cam change but 1 or the other needs to happen, whichever, personally I think the converter route (2800 at least) will wake it up rather than a shorter dur cam in theory cos of the dead gears.....it would've been much better with those 3.91's, taller tyres and a loose converter, but we all have different levels of what we are willing to put up with on the street. Mine was 4k rpm@55mph after I changed to 4.30's and 4200 verter.

-- Sounds like You want something in between a cruiser, and a quicker car. - Go back to 3.91s - OR - 3.55s and find the right convertor.

Don't really care about bein fast just a cruiser. The car does good with stock converter and 3.23 with the cam til I stop I usually throw it nuetral so won't die

if its just a cruiser my opinion would be to swap out the cam.. to me its silly to run it just because ya like the sound. i'd want it to be right for my intended use... i think you will be happier in the end. i know i would be..

Completely agree. You can go down a couple sizes on the cam and it'll have way more bottom end and a tamer idle but you'll still hear the cam plenty good. If you want to stay hydraulic try the Lunati 60403. It'll have a choppy idle but will still work with a stock converter. In all reality since you say you just cruise it the best thing to do is to step down the cam size AND put a higher stall in it. Something in the neighborhood of 2500 stall will let it idle better at stop signs and give you more punch out of the hole and it'll still drive really good on the street. One last thing, I completely agree with everyone that if you do go the route of installing a converter call some of the good companies and tell them your combination as well as you know it and they can build something that will work right. And don't worry about the price because a custom converter usually doesn't cost much more than a off the shelf unit and it'll work a lot better.
