If the engine is a 1968 and up, yes your modification will work. However, if the engine is a 1962-1967 engine, the pilot size is different.
1962-1967 Crankshaft pilot 1.550"
1968-up Crankshaft pilot 1.810"
Just get a converter built to your specifications. With the early engine, you won't find one on the shelf at Summit etc.
