You can actually bend the rod at the pedal to get more travel out of it.
Just pull up hard on the pedal and you'll see that it makes the pedal a little higher and it'll open the carb all the way.
Done it a bunch of times on cars over the years.

i always figured this would be a temporary fix, and when he stomps on it, he'll just bend it right back again
