i have a 70 dart custom and it came with a 318 with an auto from the factory but its gone. i am thinking about building this car for my wife and would like to stick with a 318.
my question is, what year span 318s will work in this car. i would like to simply drop one in without any worries about changing stuff. besides the obvious, same year as mine but different car, like a 318 out of a coronet, what else will work?

The 318 will be nice for the wife and has just the right amount of power unless she is a gearhead like us then you may want to bigger. I would stay 70-up and the 88-92 has a roller cam

Guessing you want to keep it a small block? If so why a 318? 360 will drop in...

ok, thanks. i figured the 70's where a good start. maybe a can find an engine and trans combo to drop in.

yes i want to keep it a small block for the reason that it will be for my wife.

staying with a 318 and not 360 because i just thought it will be easier to find a 318

Seems kind of high but maybe it's very complete and it includes everything you need. I would work on him a little bit and get some history on it. If it's a tired motor I would offer him $400-$500. If it looks like it is real nice and looks to have been rebuilt I'd go $600-$700 if it's complete. See if he will send you pics and post em

Luke, looks like you're on the right path. Btw: Good for you building this for the wife. Very nice of you and very smart. It's always easier on us if the significant other is into the hobby too. There are still lots of 318/904 combos out there. Just be patient and find the right one. It would be nice to find one in a running car (that maybe someone is switching to a big block) so you can hear it run and possibly drive it. GL.

oh yeah, she is into the old cars. her dad had some back in the day. ever since i finished my 69 charger she was wanting her own car to drive to shows or just to cruse. but of course it must have power steering and a/c, and I'm ok with that, as long as its mopar. this car has all that, just missing the motor and trans. even has fender-tag, i posted it in another thread.
if i find a 360 with trans, what would i have to change to drop it in if anything?

You should ship it up here as a roller, and Ill ship you back a nice 1980Volare/slant/904 ready to drive.Needs a little bodywork;lol

No thanks. but i would sell this car if offered the right amount of money.
if i dont build this car i have a 69 superbee for the wife, which is what i prefer, it to is power steering and a/c too. it is a tad bigger of a car, and a big block. and she could care less what i build her. but the bee needs more work and time to get it done. although these cars are never really done are they.

finally got the trunk opened and took some pics. looks like at one time it had a 340 in it. what are these parts worth? should i keep them for another small block?

ok, I have to quit working on it for the day. my quest for an engine and trans goes on.
thanks for all the help so far guys. let me know what y'all think about those parts i found. there's more just now time for posting right now.

Either there was a 340 in there at one time or someone was going to dress the 318 up. The exh mans are from a 72-73 340. There not the desirable 68-70 mans but still worth something to someone. They could be used on the 318 too. You will need to change one motor mount in order to put a 340/360 in there. Crackedback has those. Otherwise, you may need a driveshaft mod depending on the trans and you might have to rethink the rearend if its a 7.25 and anyone will be getting on the 360 at all. GL

I'd save those for her car,you just found about $500 worth of parts in the trunk. Keep digging

Is the 69 Superbee for sale?

I think everything has a price. But the bee was the car I was after. The cars where a part of a package deal. It would have to be a good offer for me to part with it and only thing I'd trade would be a 2nd gen charger.
