CARRERA SLOT CAR TRACK

-
That's what I do. Rather than be a rivet counter, I use "what looks good" and so far, it's worked for me.

Ya. I agree Rusty. The only piece I have on the layout that I don't really care for is the ambulance. I think it's 1/38th scale and it looks too small when next to the other cars. - That's why I found a spot on the layout to park it away from the rest.

John...I'm curious..What does one of these cars, cost nowadays?....

There aren't any local stores that carry them where I live. The closest is about 60 miles away in Omaha. I looked a week ago when I was there and the prices seem to vary between $40 to $60 on the cars they carried. They didn't have any wing cars where I stopped. I've been relying on eBay shopping to find them. Costs there range between around $25 to $120. Shipping is usually another $10 on top of that. Less popular cars sell cheaper and sometimes you can find a bargain on a package deal with multiple cars. I've always tried to keep my cost to an average of about $35 each (including shipping) by buying used ones.

That's a great looking track. I'm a model railroader so I can appreciate the work and thought that went into it. I think you need one more person for the pit area though. He should be tall, wearing a fancy cowboy hat and sunglasses!!!!

Good idea! I'm still going to have to detail out the next 50 figures when they show up and 'the king' would be a recognizable figure. I've been racking my brain trying to come up with ideas on how to paint the characters so that no two look alike.

My eventual goal will be to someday upgrade my analog track system to digital. Up until I started researching slot car tracks a few months ago, I never knew these things existed. I've attached a YouTube link that helps to show most of the functions they provide. If you take the time to watch it I think you'll be amazed. I know that I was.

You can run up to 6 cars on a two lane track at the same time. It's got lane changing that you control. There's an automated pace car and computer controlled opponents. It has the ability to set parameters for fuel consumption so you'll run out of gas if you don't pit. - A tower that will display the leader board. etc, etc...

After thinking about Roadcuda's suggestion for the figure with a cowboy hat & sunglasses, it gave me more ideas. With a little grinding I could modify the clothing on some to simulate driving uniforms and add some putty to the head sculpts for helmets.

I could also make a little Linda Vaughn wearing a gold jumpsuit.

Then I thought about those wild looking red & white Coca-Cola pants that some people wore during that era.

Maybe I could make a bunch of the characters wear sports team jackets or paint them in softball uniforms.

Anyone else got some ideas?

Linda Vaughn,I run around circles,in glee... On Coca Cola cars: those early 70's Monte Carlo rides, with gold and red, were my attention grabber,as a kid....Paint the figures, off of "The Last American Hero"...? It gives off ...that late 60's ,early 70's vibe...You seem to be eyeing,in my opine....

Thanks for the suggestion, bomber. It sounds like you understand the style I'm wanting to portray. I'll have to view 'The Last American Hero' again to see what I can pick up. I imagine I'll end up with a variety of characters that won't be accurate for one single year but if they looked sort of like they could be from the late 60s to early 70 they should work.

You could glue doll hair on them .
Different lengths and some on faces .

Thanks for the suggestion jimmer but I'm not sure that would be easy to do considering the scale I'm working with. Their heads are around 1/4" tall so most hair glued to them would be 1/2" or less. I think it'd be too tricky handling the glue. I think I could get by using paint to simulate differing hair lengths though. Unless you get within a few inches away you wouldn't tell the difference between hair and paint anyway. If I was dealing with taller figures (like Barbie doll or G.I.Joe) the hair idea might be something I'd try.

The search for traction has always been a big issue with slot cars. The additional traction magnets is one method an alternative is using some after market tires sometimes without any traction magnets. A thorough cleaning of the track and tires helps a lot too.

I have not done too much racing with digital controls. An oval with six cars on two lanes sounds like it could be a lot of fun. Being able to race against an autonomous car when there's nobody to race with is a fantastic feature.

You 're doing great stuff!

I'm glad you picked up on my description of the King, and liked the idea!! I look forward to seeing "him" when you get him done!!!

Thanks. - That YouTube video I posted really knocked my socks off. It surprised me how much more realism they've been able to add to this hobby. I hope you took the time to watch it. I've considered trying some of the other tires out there but thought I'd give the magnets my first shot. So far I've seen some improvement but it's really easy to add too much down force. - And you're right about that dust. Even though our basement doesn't have a big problem with it, it doesn't take much to make those cars lose adhesion.

Ya. Thanks again Roadcuda. I think I may even add a little Elvis out there. He was one of them 'Southern boys' that liked NASCAR racing. The idea of having a few recognizable figures sounds neat to me.

Our basement is filled with other goodies besides that slot car racetrack. On my restoration thread 'I've covered several other projects also. I'd guess you'd say it's become my 'man cave. Among the other projects down there I built a movie theater that has a wide assortment of movies that include almost every car film ever made. - 2-Lane Blacktop, American Graffiti, Vanishing Point, Crazy Mary- Dirty Larry
, Gone in 60 Seconds, Grand Prix, LeMans, Rush, Snake & Mongoose, Heart Like a Wheel, American Nitro, Speedway, the Blues Brothers, the Fast & the Furious, etc, etc...

Between the racetrack and the theater I set up a couple of pinball machines that includes one I modified to give it a THUNDER VALLEY Dragways theme. We even have a popcorn machine nd a pop vending machine down there for refreshments.

One of my latest endeavors is setting up the computer that is attached to our theater so that I can run NASCAR RACING 2003 on it. Yesterday I made a custom table to attach a force feedback steering/pedal assembly to it. I've had almost every car themed racing game ever produced for the computer for years but haven't messed with any of them for a long time. I figured it was high time I dug them back out so I could see how they looked on the big screen.

I think it was worth the effort. as much as I used to enjoy them, the huge size tends to really draw you into the action more so now. It took me days to find alll of the modified carsets that have made for the game over the years. Right now (in addition to the newrer NASCAR vehicles that came with the game) I've also got the '55-57 stockcars (hardtop & convertibles), the 1963 and 1966 NSCAR cars, sprint cars, late model dirt cars, Trans-Am Cudas, Camaros, and Mustangs, IMCA modifieds, asphalt modifieds,, Hobby Stocks, sports cars, 1968 Grand National cars, 1970 Winston Cup cars, and more.

It's becoming a gearhead paradise down there. I apologize for how blurry many of the images are. For some reason The FABO site isn't allowing me to post all of the images I tried to and many of them were better.

Thanks bomber. There's no way I consider myself to be any sort of an artist but I do have an uncontrollable desire to tinker with stuff and like to try to create a unique decor with whatever I find available. I had an aunt that was very artistic. She worked with clay sculptures and liked to paint. Among some of her accomplishments were a few pieces she had made that former presidents Nixon and Reagan presented to foreign dignitaries. Nixon had her make a sculpture that was presented to China during his famous trip there and Reagan gave one of her sculptures to a Japanese dignitary. I may not have her talent but I think I inherited her desire to be creative. Maybe I would have turned my need to create into something more productive if I wasn't such a gearhead.

Any one into the old Aurora modeling motor stuff? I have a ton of it for a users good home.

One of THE COOLEST man caves I have ever seen!!!!

Yeah, yeah, I've seen some cool bars and such, but DAMN, you have a car guys paradise!!

We're in the same boat halifaxhops. I've also got a bunch of the HO scale track I'd be willing to give away. I know that stuff has value but I'd rather see someone getting use out of it than watching it deteriorate.
