273 vs 318

Hell, you can see me on the 2010 September issue of GQ magazine. No need to post selfies!!!

We should do an IG thread. I'd like to put some faces with names and cars with names for that matter.

When I was running the 273:

If I went 340:

Indisputable Science.

I can speak from actual experience, as I had a 68 Barracuda with a 318, and I swapped it out for a rebuilt stock commando 273. Both engines in the same vehicle ran within a hair of each other in the quarter mile, low 16's if I recall. The 318 had more low end torque and the 273 had more mid range and top end, but over a quarter of a mile they were the same. The 273 did have more smile factor when you kicked it down from a roll.

Convert a dart into a AWD lol. It would be awesome tho @nm9stheham a go anywhere old school hotrod

With all other things equal besides the cubes, the two engines will be almost indistinguishable. The only basic difference is the stroke.......and before some smartass tries to tell me they have different heads, READ what I typed. ALL OTHER THINGS EQUAL.

Rob, it's the bore that's different. Not the stroke. Same crank and rods.

I understand that completely, which is why I stand by my point. Bore difference has a negligible effect on power. If however the stroke was greater on the 318, it would be a slam dunk, but it's not. Dress the 273 out with the same heads and induction and exhaust as the 318 and it will perform almost identically.

Same argument can be made with 318 and 340. Except, there is less of a difference in bore between a 318 and 340. 23 cubes difference between 318 and 340 (all bore), and 45 cubes difference between 273 and 318 (all bore).

I agree......and I can count, too. lol A 318 decked out with all the 340 goodies would spank a 340 if the 340 guy wasn't just right off the line.

Also, don't forget, with the 273, it has the lighter crank and rods. That can and will make a difference.

Ive had both, my current 273 would spak my old 76 318 that was in my old dart. BUT not really a fair comparison eather. The 318 had lower compression raito vs my 273. Now give the 318 equal ammout of compression & closed chamber heads. & im sure the 318 would have an edge. Mainly in the lower rpm range.

What's the wheel bas and track width on an STI?

Food for thought

Edit: WRX is 103/60.2 and a dart is 111or 108/59.6

You would have loved the 4WD Dodge Aspen that Scott Harvey built around 1980. It had a 360 and 727 set back around 18", with some sort of transfer case feeding a Toronado front drive unit in addition to the rear axle. It was a top 3 car in any Pro Rally back in the day.

If you like, I find a picture.

IIRC, Scott was an engineer in the Direct Connection group for Dodge.
