Mopars Orange ECU for daily driver?

Anybody have first hand experience running Mopars Orange Ecu on a daily driver? Wondering if there have any reliability issues in this day and age of crappy electrical components.
 
They definitely had a high failure rate at one time, and I don't know if they have corrected that. I have run three or four, had one fail. I might have one going bad now. Trying to pinpoint a problem on my car now.
 
What kind of failures? They pretty much just quit and leave you on the side of the road?
 
I also sell the HEI kits if you don't want to mess with making your own.

I had just ordered a new one and everytime I would start the car when it was cold soaked, it had a bad misfire. I for sure thought it was something else causing it, but each time I put my old NAPA one back in it corrected the issue. The orange one didn't like the cold for some reason. Sticking with NAPA (Echlin) Ignition Control Module from now on.

I haven't had an orange box fail on me yet. But I always carry an extra along with a ballast resistor in my trunk. Dustin

I tried running one for awhile. It would cause ignition problems and missing at anything over about 3,500 rpm. Put in a chrome box ecu, no problems. The orange box's are garbage even when they "work". I kept the one I had as a spare for awhile before I switched to a standalone electronic distributor.
 
4 years on my orange one. Only issue ive had is with a bad voltage regulator.

Swap in a chrome box and see what happens. Every time I've done it the car has run noticeably better, especially at higher rpm's. The orange boxes start to fall off well before their stated limits.

Had the same problem with a brand new Autozone ECU. I use an older wrecking yard purchased ECU. Don't know the brand. Works great. Keep another wrecking yard ECU in the trunk. I don't trust the newer electronics...
 
I use the 505 Orange box in all my cars ....for years now, never a failure. No issues what so ever and this is running more than one in more than one car.
Of course a failure is possible with anything mechanical/ electrical....Carry a spare,,,ballast resistor as well is being smart. One thing...be sure to use the correct Ballast resistor with the orange box...check the Ohm's as it does matter and will cause high heat and failures, maybe this is the issue with some of you? The kit when sold by Mopar included the correct Ohm ballast. A simple meter ohm test will tell you the ohm of your ballast.
The ECU/coil/ballast variations are covered in the Ignition chapter of the Mopar Engines book. Production coil with Chrome or Orange box uses .50 or .70 ohm resistor.
 
Had an orange fail on me after only a couple months. I also carry a spare one and a ballast resistor.
 
How much $$$$ on the conversion kits.

Those are 149.99 shipped and they eliminate the boxes and ballast resister both.
Double the spark energy and reliable as can be.
A lot of the guys on here run my HEI kits.
 
Sounds pretty cool to me. You got any pics of the set up? What type of distributor and parts are used?
 
Between my dad and I every one has failed totaling two. One of them outright died the other would get hot and fail, then cool and work until hot again.

We both have Chrome boxes now and they work great .When and if my chrome box fails I'll go HEI.

Yep, advance performance modified and total timing limit plate from FBO.
The distributors are OEM type so the cap, rotor, and plug wires are all the same and do not need to be changed.
Not a bad idea, but not necessary.
