8 1/4 rear

They already have that style bearing.

The bearing is in the housing on 8 1/4's and not on the axle like 8 3/4 and Dana's

You can kinda say that, yes. But the bearings do ride on the axle, similar to the GM style. They are not however, the tapered roller style like the 8 3/4, which is what I meant.......they are much closer in design to the green bearings than the tapered roller.

The bearings stay in the housing end on an 8 1/4 and the 8 3/4 and Dana have them attached to the axle and you can go green or std bearing was what I was getting at.

The problem with the 8 1/4 rear is the fact that the axle shaft is the inner bearing race and is subject to wear like Rusty said, but the 8 3/4 which uses a unitized bearing assembly be it the tapered roller or aftermarket ball bearing style the axle isn't in direct contact with the roller parts of the bearing. There is a "problem solver" bearing available for early 2000's jeeps that will fit 70's era mopars with worn axle shafts, it places the bearing on a normally unused part of the axle shaft if you axles are worn.

That is the problem I have with one of my axles. Would you happen to have a part number?
