hey everyone my sister has a 14 dart sxt and has had a issue with the engine shutting off and after it sits for a few minutes starts back up and no issues. Ive read online that there are people having issues with the oil level being un necessarily low before the recommended oil change interval.

Its just about at the 3 year 36,000 mile range and it would be just so convenient to tear up after the warranty.

Shes coming over tomorrow and ill take a further look at it but anyone else heard of these issues?

Thank god for the simplicity of the 60's and 70's. i dont think ill ever buy a brand new car lol

1st thing, check for codes.
Autozone and some others will do this for free.

Thanks i will do that, check engine light isnt on but there may be a stored code. Im starting to think this is a factory issue but we will see.

Yea, if you get lucky it may tell why it's dying in the first place.

If under warranty, she might want to take it to a dealer to get checked out. They may find something and fix it for free. If not, at least it will be on record that there was a reported problem if it reoccurs down the road. (Nice pun right there) That gives her some leverage.
I've been a Mopar guy all my life, but I've had so many problems with their modern iron the last few decades that I've moved on to a more reliable brand. But I would cave in for a new generation Challenger as a part time fun car.

Had an issue with occasional engine shutdown on our '08 Sebring. Could restart it almost right away after. Never really found out why. Never came up with a code either. I suspect the key chip as being the culprit though.

I have a 2015, with 2.0 and 6 speed manual, that has "blipped" on me 6 times in as many weeks. Blipped = dash flash, and slightest engine flutter. I wouldn't even call it a stutter. They just replaced the thermostat under warranty, but could not account or replicate the blip. It is on record, and I might have to get a dash cam to record if it becomes any more pronounced. The indepth scanners at dealer should be able to look at recent data, to see what is dropping (fuel, ignition, etc)

What Kosmic said. If it is under warranty, take it to Dodge now, and have the concern documented. Do NOT let them tell You "we couldn't find anything wrong, You don't need to
sign anything,...there's no charge", ALWAYS get a customers copy of the order w/the mileage and date with the concern clearly stated. Most dealers are good about this, but a
few , WTTW!

Oh yeah, don't let a parts house muckity plug in and read,..then erase stored data
that the dealer should be getting a look at, there are TSB's and "fix-it-right"s, etc.
that are not part of a campaign(recall), but are covered if a cust. has a pattern type
concern. It may be a simple reflash of the ECM, so.......

I have a 2014 2.0 6speed, but I have not had that issue.

She came over today. Dont have a code reader so couldn't pull any codes. I know a lot of people that had similar issues stated that they took it to the dealer and the dealer said the engine oil level was low. So sure enough checked the oil and it was about only 1/4" up the stick. Went and got penzoil platinum 0w20 which is what it calls for and what dodge sells, a wix filter and changed the oil. My dad changed the oil 3,967 miles ago with the same 0w20 penzoil platinum and we measured what came out of the oil pan and what came out of the oil filter. We only got 2.5 qts of oil out and it calls for 5.5 qts full. So 3 qts of oil used in almost 4,000 miles? No leaks under the car anywhere and only has 34,967 miles on it. It did it again today before she came over and happened in the same spot on the same hill. We'll see if it does it again with the oil level full

Yes common issue on these. I am a tech at a Chrysler dealer and see this quite often. If your were to pull the spark plugs you will prob find oil buildup on plugs, There were issues on some of the 2.4 Multi-Air engine that had the oil rings broken upon assembly at the factory. Take it to your local dealer to have an oil consumption test started, usually they will have you come back every 1000 miles for 3 times and that way the issue has documentaion for FCA to get engine replacement approved. Good Luck!! J.R.

So what do i do if they jerk me around at the dealer?

What is a FCA?

Also even if its at almost 35,000 miles and they start the consumption test will it still be under warranty even after the test has been completed at 38,000 miles?

Is there any info out there that chrysler has released or are tgey trying to keep it under raps?

Thanks again for your help I greatly appreciate it

Also if you dont mind what chrysler dealer do you work for?
I dont need your name just if they give me any hassel i want to let em know what a chrysler tech told me

FCA is Fiat Chrysler Automoblies ( The new Chrysler) lol. No info released to the public, just some STAR cases ( our technical assistance center). Just tell the dealer that it is consuming oil and stalling. The multi-air assembly uses oil pressure to actuate the intake valves, if oil pressure gets low or oil pickup gets starved for oil, pressure drops and stalls the engine. Dont worry on the mileage. 2014 powertrain warranty is 5 year 100,000 miles so u are ok. They may ask for your oil change receipts, or want to have them change the oil to start the consumption. Once that begins do not add any oil to it on your own. Let them see the low level for themselves. I work at Ed Voyles Chrysler in Marietta GA. Let me know if you have any more questions.

Thanks a lot man greatly appreciate it. Your not too far then im here in Cleveland TN lol.
Thanks again for your help. We just changed the oil yesterday so ill have her take it there asap. I still got the 5 qt jug that we poured the 2.5 qts into plus the reciept for the correct oil and filter

For what its worth, my wife a 2014 dart with the turbo 6-speed, it just thru a code. "Service after run coolant pump"
I called the dealer and they said after telling what the code was, hold please.
Over the phone I could sense they had the deer in the headlight look, not knowing wtf is wrong with the car.
When they took me off hold, they made a quick appointment and said I had to leave the car with them.
This kinda confirmed my initial thought, they have not seen this before.
It goes in Tuesday, the dealer has been great dealing with the other minor problem the car had dead battery. Time will tell how this car holds up in the long run.

If you have the turbo then it is a 1.4l mulit-air engine. That is a Fiat designed engine and believe it or not other than some faulty turbos early on, we have not had any issues out of that engine. They do not have oi lconsumption issues that i have seen. They dont make a lot of power but seem to be pretty reliable. This is the engine that will be in the new Fiat/Miata 2 door car coming out soon.

You mean the car threw a code that they don't know what it is?
That's scary. :D

It sounded like they have not have had any other cars with the same issue, but the car still runs fine.

My youngest Son has a 13...So far under warranty the engine has been replaced..2 module's and the whole front end have been replaced..He used to brag the car up but not so much anymore.:)

Why try to diagnose/repair it yourself? All new Fiat/Chyrsler cars have at least 5 year/ 50,000 mile powertrain warranty. It might even be 100,000 miles now.

Powertrain warranty is 5 year 100,000 till 2016 model year then it dropped to 5 year 60,000. Except on diesel models, its still 5/100

You have to realize, You're talking to an office girl making appointments, or a service writer who sometimes knows little more than the office girl. If it is a common failure/issue,
sure, they may be familiar enough with it to recognize what's up when they schedule the appointment. But otherwise, once it's in our hands, we may know exactly what's up, &
it's no biggie.

Almost every modern engine being manufactured today is using oil controlled chain tensioners & cam timing/phasing units, as well as valve actuators/engagement techniques,
so it's not uncommon to have codes pop up when the customer's oil has been neglected or run low. Also, take newer Hyundai engines for instance, there are oil jets spraying
the underside of the pistons/skirts. There are lots of things to go wrong if the level & condition of the oil is compromised.

But there is no reason for these newer cars to be consuming oil. It causes all sorts of problems long term. There is no way using a quart of oil every 1000 miles is considered normal
