If you have a diaphragm clutch, you shouldn't be running an overcenter spring on the pedal at all. You're supposed to remove them completely for a diaphragm clutch.

Agreed if he does have the diaphragm plate I'm surprised it doesn't have a catch in it someplace IE acts like it sticking -- been there done that
