I am curious, how often do you change the oil in your slant? I have the 66 dart with a recently rebuilt Slant 6. I probably put 200 miles a month on it.

My daily driver has been in continuous use since 1964 (bought from original family)
Original 170, well over a million miles on it.
I put 30,000+ miles on in a year.
Had it 4 years..120,000 miles. One oil change in all that time. No leaks, no smoke, six good cylinders.
Waiting for it to die so I can drop in a 225. Dont look like that's gonna happen anytime soon

You can't make stuff like this up.
In that four years, 2 sets of points, one set of plugs and wires.
A belt, a water pump, a couple sets of brakes and axle bearings.
They just dont make em like that anymore

That is just amazing and very cool. Goes to show you that /6's are a great engine.

I have a similar story from 1976.
Well not really similar,at all.
I had to add oil about every 4 hours, so I never gave it an oil change in all the time I owned that 65 long-roof, lol. It didn't take but a few months and I had a 340 in her!
heehee

How much oil do you add?

I'm wondering if just adding oil is keeping the oil good...........

Adding oil is fine between oil changes,.but you need to change the oil and filter every 2000 to 3000 miles or every 3 months in my opinion no matter what. Also use an oil with zinc in it or zinc additive with our old /6's. AMSOIL or equivalent is good oil. 10w40 and a good oil filter and you're good to go. I use Hastings oil filters and use the bigger Ford filter, not that you have to use Hasting,.but they are a good filter IMO.

The oil change interval depends upon the severity of your driving and how you rack up the 200 miles/month is what determines the severity. I would consider four 50 mile trips at a time to be normal service while twenty 10 mile trips at a time would be severe service. According to my 65 Valiant owners manual:

Chrysler said:
The optimum engine oil change period will vary widely depending upon the type of operation, weather conditions, and other operating variables. For instance, during short trip driving in cold weather or driving on dusty roads, oil changes should be made as frequently as every 500 miles. Cross-country driving with good oils will permit 4,000 miles of operation between changes. As a general rule, however, it is recommended that the engine oil be changed approximately every three month (or 4,000 miles, whichever occurs first).

See Chrysler Oil Recommendations

I use Shell Rotella T 10W-30 in my slant six and change it every 5000 miles because I generally drive it on trips longer than 30 minutes so the engine oil always gets fully hot. I also have to add 1 Qt every 1000 miles.
See Selection of the Right Motor Oil for the Corvair and other Engines

I have also upgraded to the 75 psi hemi oil spring and my original engine (guessing approaching 200,000 miles) has 70-75 psi of pressure at 2500 RPM on the hottest days here. Using a 40-weight oil just means that the relief valve bleeds more oil back to the sump. Chrysler did recommend 20W-40 but I would use a 15W-40 if you really want to use a 40-weight oil.
