No more MSD

-
speedmaster is the old pro comp..I got one of their 6al version in 73 duster has been working fine...someone gave it to me cause it did not work...it works..

professional products are out of china also....

Used Jacobs stuff in the past, worked fine, but been running msd for the last 14 yrs. Nology wires were a thing for a bit I remember..lol capacitors at each plug.

What bugging you with the msd stuff?

Wow crane isn't making the hi-6 cd ignition boxes anymore?
That's what I was going to suggest, I'm running one of them with a crane lx91 coil.
I bet if you check eBay you'll be able to
Find some of the crane boxes with free shipping.

Mine has been ok, but just this Saturday we had some weirdly nice weather and went for a little blast. Had a hot start issue that was definitely spark. Also as long as I've had it, the friggin box itself has been 12 volt hot. Key on, off.....wired correctly. Very weird.

Called them to get repair info and not happy with their........"phone manners". Lot of guys seem to be having issues.

I posted it last fall under "freaky MSD box" This pic is with the key off. From last fall.

Plenty of Crane boxes on Ebay, not much description-wise. I need one that will work with my MSD billet distrib, which is still working fine. Not much there to go wrong......timing locked, just a magnetic pick up.

Gotta do me some research. Again.

Well, crap. I was thinking about buying a new MSD setup for my 69 340 Barracuda. I had heard a few complaints about MSD, but then again there are people (like me) who don't like Holley Carbs. Is there really a quality problem with MSD????

I know they had serious rust and corrosion issues with their internal parts for a time. Whether they have corrected that, I do not know. There were lots of complaints about it on this very site. It was weird. Advance weights and total guts of MSD distributors were rustin all to hell.

I just sent an old analog 6AL box for repair; tach output bad and figured the rev limit didn't work to. Under $90 with shipping and came back with a full test sheet and works great. A nice lady answered the phone to give me an RMA# before I sent it in.

hot ground-wired wrong ???

Geez.... No. It's wired exactly like it's supposed to be. It's so simple a child could wire it.
You sound a little like MSD repair department...

It's got some internal problem, obviously. It's been like this since 2010. Thankfully it hasn't found a ground yet..

If You remove the ground wire, is it hot as well? Been a bit since I looked at the diagram, but don't recall the housing needing to be grounded as well, just the black wire.

The most likely internal fault is assembly error with electrical/thermal insulator used on transistor that switches primary current in the boost voltage section. The heatsink is the case. The rubber vibration insulator mounts, are providing external isolation to ground. A dangerous shock condition may exist. Shorting case to ground, may fail unit.

For safety, ESD, electrical emissions, cases are typically grounded. The instructions seem void of the requirement.

I certainly agree that it's an assembly error.

Well couple days after my original post, I had a hot no start issue......got it running and limped home.
Fired up the next day popping and pretty much undriveable.

Didn't do a damn thing except order this HI 6 DSR from FAST. Took a couple afternoons to get everything as neat as I could.

Really nice....all connections are weatherpack....built in 2 stage. Not as neat installation-wise as the MSD but the rat nest is pretty well hidden.

So, the car cold started better than ever. Idled on its own way quicker than before (no choke, big cam). Of course it ran just great today in 40 degree weather. I THINK maybe better throttle response.

That car is just a friggin beast. Nail it at 2500 and that shift light just comes on like....BANG .best be ready to shift before ya even nail it. My light comes on at 6700.

Makes me wonder why I want MORE! But now that my yappin my motor up is done, I really like the ignition and hope it holds up well.

Here's a pic of it installed and I threw one in of the Beast 2, coming soon...

I've seen MSD ignitions of the dyno be 12-15 HP down from a Mallory. Never test the Crane. The one you bought does resemble the Crane.

Just about anything is better than MSD.
