I have a stock 3.55 cone type 8.75. I get a slight hum on decel. The pattern looks beautiful on both sides of the tooth. Tried different weight oils. It's quiet under acceleration. Doesn't matter if you are turning or straight. Should I just rock on and see? Tried to take pics but the lighting was bad and the flash hid the paste pattern. Is it possible it's just a noisy mate of the two gears? This chunk has never been apart. Came from a wrecked A-100 I believe. Been a while since I pulled it.

I get a slight wine from My 8-1/4", non-posi, with 2.76 gears. - My friend tells Me, that He has had several , of these, and they all did it. -- Any body else ??

Same here, 3.55 slight whine on deceleration only. Does not concern me in the least.

I get a howl out of my SG 741 3.91 s. It's louder on acceleration and quiets on deceleration. The gear teeth contact are within specs. Probably a pinion bearing.

Gears whine, bearings growl/ roar. Slight whine is little concern. Depending on when it is makes noise: during acceleration (drive side), or deceleration (coast side) of the ring gear.

it is barely a hum at best... The 2.76 that came out was super duper quiet.

Retorque the pinion nut. just in case (no pun intended)
He's right.
Couldn't hurt, may help.
Hum on drive could be wrong depth by spacers selected or worn, but hum on coast could very well be loose pinion nut.

A hum probably isn't a gear mesh issue. Probably a pinion bearing going south. Re-torqueing it may make it worse if the bearing is bad
