but please make me feel better right now = I look at my 383 sitting inside my new to me '68 barracuda engine bay and I can clearly see the motor does not sit dead center from the fenders...should it? I mean it's a couple inches off..definitely favors passenger side..exhaust manifold very tight to passenger side fender well compared to driver side..

Gotta' have room for the steering.
That is correct. All classic Mopars had the engines offset to the right. The transmission too. Take a look at the differential. You'll see the pinion is offset to the same side.
Mine is the same.
Every drive line has approx' 7 degree offset. You'll find the rear end is angled a bit too. Measure tire to fender clearance. Left and right are different.

The Chrysler engineers were way ahead of their time, because they knew some day mostly old fat guys were going to drive these cars so they compensated with the drivetrain mounting.

fwiw- visited Summit Racing for 1st time today...45min drive from house. Unreal place size of football field (not including attached warehouse which is probably 3x). talk about a candy store. 3 race cars hanging off ceiling in one corner, couple rail dragsters on the floor room, couple other muscle cars about.. all the parts, gear, accessories everywhere. well organized, unique place.
Mopar engines are offset 1 3/8" to 1 1/2" to the passenger side. This is on purpose for steering column/shaft/gear box clearance.
after an air cleaner base for this one - the base on there now is a something hacked-up/cut-down from I don't know what and does not seal at all where bottom of air filter meets base. Was thinking of getting another unit with similar drop and just using the new base.. just barely clears coil using a 1/2" spacer..
