1970 steering wheel interlock removal

It will not lock up. The key controls that. The only thing with the collar it may mover and may not start (just move it back). If the car is a real 340 car I would leave it alone if not just cut the lower piece off. I have the same think on my 70 Duster. Do you have the linkage?
Just a 318 car, but will be replaced with a 340/360 this summer. I do have the original linkage from the 3 speed, but it is not compatible with a 4 speed. If a guy was driving the car and the key got pulled out, wouldn't the wheel lock up then? Not so much worried about this when I am driving, but this is a father/son project and you never know what kids could do while horsing around. My other thought was if I could remove the tube, I could replace the lower bearing with an er-16 like others have done.
