PLEASE READ FULL INTRO...

So my garage has been getting built over the fall and winter and I anticipate it to be completed some time in spring/summer.

I don't work in construction and I did some research before planing it, But I can see already that if I were to do it again, it would have been different.

Anyways. The foundation, and framing is completed and the sheeting is almost done.
Im wanting interior layout ideas. I had original plans for how I want to put locations of work bench, compressor, Stand up drill, Grinder, parts cleaner etc. But I am up to other peoples ideas.

So grab a pen and draw my shop plan out and tell me where you would put your tools/welder, benches etc if this shop was yours...

The Garage is a rectangle. 2500Sq feet with a 500 sq foot carport. But lets just worry about the garage floor space. The dimensions are as follows

North wall is solid 65 ft long (no windows, no doors)
East wall is 40 Ft long with a man door in the south corner of the east wall (2 windows)
West wall is a solid 40 ft wall (3 windows)
South wall starting from the south west corner is as follows:
4ft wall
12 ft Bay door
7.5ft wall
10ft bay door
7.5ft wall
12ft bay door
12ft wall (with window)

I will be planning on getting a hoist right away as well, so you can position that in your ideas as well.

Lets see some ideas...I will try and see if my phone will upload any pics

PS, may need electrician if you work in Maple Ridge BC area ;)

Thanks
Phil

Mine is 32x54. Here is my thread. unfortunately, the pics are changed since the site revamp. But they are there. You just have to load each one at a time. I put a mezzanine in on the one end and put the office and workbench area below it. This kept the rest of the floor open. The mez takes 14' of my floor so it left me with 32x40 as my shop area. All my electrical is in conduit. This was due to it being a steel building, but I also wanted uninhibited access should the need arise to change or add.

My hiding place!

Curious to hear what you would do differently next time now that the foundation/framing is done. I'll be having a garage built in the next couple of years but it won't be anywhere near 2,500sq ft. I'm hoping to have a 900sq ft garage even though I have the space for more.

Because i am not experienced at construction, i didn't have an eye for what had to be done to put it in this location. The grade didn't seam like much to me, but in fact it was. I would have flipped the whole south wall lay out the other way around. and possibly re located it somewhere else entirely in order to use less concrete.

I also may have not done my carport the way I did. I continued the trusses past the east wall 12 feet so the roof lone continues over the carport. It will look great. But WAY more expensive then throwing up a lean too after final inspection.

probably a couple other things I would change as well

Shop layouts are always changing depending on what the need is at any given time I put as much stuff as possible on casters that way I can change things around as needed easily

Exactly. I've got a couple of things that are very hard to move because they aren't on wheels. One is a 12 x 3 workbench built in the 1930s...

Same here , workbenches and equipment on casters. The only other thing I would recommend is have tools centrally located so as not to be running end to end.

I put my air compressor outside and piped the air inside with 1/2" galvanized pipe. Air outlets about every ten feet with water traps and a good hose reel at each end of the workspace. The noise of an inside compressor is irritating.

That noise brings me back to a happy place. It does suck when a good song is on the radio, though. I'm only going to be able to build a 3 stall garage, so I have to utilize vertical storage, ie a 4 post lift to drive one on, one under, with a 2 post lift for working on one. Girlfriends car gets one stall, closest to the house.

Caster..... Spend the time putting anything you can on wheels. Easy for cleanup. An example is my steel work table with the Belt Sander and Grinder roll under the car when on the Lift and is the cat's meow.....

Air Compressor outside. Love thy neighbor lol but they would do the same thing to you.... If you want it quiet create an enclosure with sound deadner. And if you have the cash for that size of a building get a 80 gallon 2 stage and never worry about air again.

Conduit for Wiring. Enough Led light to make Wrigley Field look dim and. I have 1500sqft. of garage and the only thing I wish was different was another 5 feet in front of the lift (maybe 8 or so now.) But I am thinking about building a tool rack for my wall and getting rid of atleast 2 of my Toolboxes....

Good luck,
JW

Just put in a Bendpak 4 post lift and got the casters to go with it. Assembled in the middle and pushed it to a handy spot. It your doing a lift, plan for the height.

Thanks for all the comments. Gets me thinking about some stuff.

why shop is 14 feet high everywhere, so lifts won't be an issue

I have compressor outside plumbed inside then use 50' reel with 1/2" hose that can connect smaller whip hose for air guns. I was going to plumb it with steel lines but this worked better.

My shop is nowhere near as big as yours but I have gravitated to having all my equipment on one long wall and supply cabinets on the end wall, leaving one wall totally clean. Just makes me feel good and I can cram vehicles right up against the "clean" wall if I need to.
