I am switching my Duster over to use large bolt pattern (lbp) wheels from the small bolt pattern (sbp).

I am going to keep the Kelsey Hayes front disc brakes but use the Mustang rotors for the bolt pattern.

My question switching the rear brakes...should I go with the 10" or 11" b-body drum brakes?

Or does size really matter?

How is parts availability for both?

I run 11x2.5" drums on my Challenger and Duster. The 11" drums do provide more stopping power, although they are heavier. I swapped the Challenger over to the 11" drums after I upgraded to 11.75" rotors up front. The 11" drums are a better match for the larger front rotors, which is also why I added them to my Duster, which had 11.75" rotors and now has 13" rotors from Dr Diff. Both cars use stock prop valves, and the front/rear balance is good. I haven't tried running the 11" drums on the back with the smaller stock rotors up front though, I always went to the large rotors up front first.

Parts for the 11" drums are readily available, maybe not quite as prevalent as the 10x2.5" brakes but I haven't had any issues fining what I need for them in the way of drums, shoes, or hardware. I run the large finned 11" drums, they do a better job of filling up my 17 and 18" rims than the plain style as the outer diameter is a bit bigger with the fins.
 
10" was pretty much standard on all v8 vehicles up to 85. If your going to go 11" make sure it's the 2 1/2 wide. The 2" were an odd ball and only used on c bodies.

Good point, the 11" brakes came in 2", 2.5", and 3". The 2" and 3" wide versions are harder to find drums and shoes for, but the hardware is the same.

Believe it or not, the 11" drums were used up to 1995 as an option on some of the Grand Caravans, Voyagers and Town & Country's. You can also get 11x2.5" backing plates from a lot of trucks and vans all the way up to 1998, but the bolt pattern on the drums is wrong. Still, it's easy enough to pull the 11" backing plates and hardware at the yard and just buy new drums with the correct pattern.

Here's a list of all the vehicles that came with 11x2.5" drums with the correct 5x4.5" pattern. They were an option of some of these cars, so not every one at the yard will have them. The list gets even longer if you just want the backing plates, because they came on a lot of the 150's, 250's, 1500's, and even 2500's up to 1998.

Thanks, my concern was that the 11" drums might be a bit of over kill for my stock front disc set-up.

Most likely I will go with 10" but someone made me a good offer on an 11" drum set-up.

In a perfect world I would switch to 17" or 18" wheels but finances will have me sticking with my current 15" tires...so unfortunately filling up wheel space isn't important.

I went with 10" x 2-1/2" B-body drums to go with my 73-76 front discs. (stock a-bod 10" drums were 1-3/4" wide through 1972) I tell people I basically have Road Runner brakes on my 68 cuda. The 70's a-bods and later F-bods also used them but by then the cars were heavier.
In my opinion, the 11" drums are overkill on an A-body and have you ever lifted one? Wow, they are heavy. That takes more power to accelerate them than a lighter 10" drum so your car will accelerate slower. Unless you are in some form of racing where you use the brakes a LOT....
A 73-76 A-body power disc brake master cylinder run manually works well.

Hello Paul... what year mustang rotors did you use to to get the 4.5 bolt pattern for the duster... im in the same situation i really dont wanna change the kelsey hays calipers for right now but i would love to up grade to the bigger bolt pattern

There is a guy here on FABO who just detailed the Mustang rotor to A-body spindle,recently. Sorry I forgot his name. Perhaps a search will find it. It was not very long ago.


Yeah AJ, i did some digging on the net and found out the front rotors of a 67 mustang fit 70 to72 cars with kelsey hayes 4 piston calipers, same bearings and all i couldn't believe it.... just wanted to know if i had to shim anything up to center the caliper if the depth had a difference in it. so I'm gonna buy some cheap rotors at autozone and figure it out..... love the fact that it carries the larger 4.5 bolt pattern, plus saves me a ton of work and my car gets to stay original..... best news I've seen all day :thumbsup:
 
1965-1967 Mustang rotors are what you need. I bought Raybestos 6004R rotors from Rock Auto. You need to read the thread about the conversion, you will need some milling done, but the coversion does work great and keeps the factory look.

Yeah AJ, i did some digging on the net and found out the front rotors of a 67 mustang fit 70 to72 cars with kelsey hayes 4 piston calipers, same bearings and all i couldn't believe it.... just wanted to know if i had to shim anything up to center the caliper if the depth had a difference in it. so I'm gonna buy some cheap rotors at autozone and figure it out..... love the fact that it carries the larger 4.5 bolt pattern, plus saves me a ton of work and my car gets to stay original..... best news I've seen all day :thumbsup:

Im reading it as we speak, awesome job!!! longone did some killer research and leg work... all the imput thats on the forum and all the different ways to go about making this work blows my mind, again thank you guys!!! you just saved me a ton of money!!!!
