Just from what I can see in the pictures there are 2 things not helping your cause any.
No shroud and an upper hose that limits flow.

We need radiator size, how many rows of tubes in the radiator core, thermostat temp rating, and if it heats up quicker at lower speeds or higher.
That would be a good start.

What overheats, Water temp? Ignition system? I see a OEM type icm but no ballast resistor. Coil overheating?

OEM type coil operated on reduced voltage via the ballast resistor to prevent its overheating. Actually the ICM did too back when it was a 5 wire unit. That's where the dual resistor came in. The newer 4 wire ICM can operate on 12 volts so you can probably get by with the single type resistor. Or upgrade to a e coil made for continuous 12 volts.

Your ballast resistor is mounted right underneath your control module from what I see in the picture. They are cheap and usually stocked at your local parts store. Is your coil mounted on your intake manifold? I had an oil filled one get real hot when mounted on the intake and would miss at idle. Bought an epoxy filled one and installed it on the fender and the problem went away.

GOOD CATCH you two.:D
But even though the ballast is there doesn't mean it's connected the way it should be.

The statement made about shutting down should have been a clue, but I didn't put it together as ignition.

I see an orange box, I had an issue with one of those brand new getting hot after about 20 minutes driving. It would shut the car down and wouldn't restart till it cooled off. Replaced with an old one I had and never did it again.

I have also heard a lot about those problems with the orange boxes.
