What is the best two barrel carburetor for a 318? My 318 engine has been rebuilt with mild performance upgrades. I'm currently running a basic Holley two barrel carb but wish to upgrade to a better two barrel. Any opinions? I thought about changing over to a four barrel but I'm kind of diggin the two barrel old school carb. Opinions greatly appreciated. Electric choke would be great for my next two barrel if available. Thanks

Sounds to me like you already have the best one. Those old Carter 2 barrels sucked, bad! They cost Chrysler billions, wow they were awful. I remember them well, always stalling etc.

Why a 2bbl? The early single plane factory 2Bbl manifold was particularly awful, and the later dual plane wasn't much better.

I have dealt with NUMEROUS factory holley 2 barrel issues when i was in the field ... 2 barrel carters in my opinon were better ... Chrysler stalling issues were due to intake ice up , bad ignition systems .... I would agree to go with a 4 barrel ... If money is an issue ... try and locate a Dodge Van .... Some were built with a 4 barrel Rochester Quadrajet that worked EXCELLENT ... elec choke and everything.

Best 2 barrel carb????....is the one thats on your bench, and NOT on your engine.

Ditch the 2 boggers, and get a 4 barrel.... (not gonna start the perverbial Holley vs. everyone else arguement)

If you want a good two barrel on the cheap, I'd find a motorcraft off an older ford truck, the junkyards are full of them...

Back in my "usta days, I built up a 318 for my son's 73 duster: used 360 heads and 360 2 BBl manifold and a holley oem 2 BBL carb: great mileage and able to use all the original linkage, choke connects etc. The bigger ports in the manifold and heads really made the 318 liven up!

why not a 500cfm holley 2 barrel.. i run one a 360 amc and run good.... same carb they use on the dirt track cars.

I agree, the 2100 series motorcraft is lightyears better than a carter. most jeep guys with carters make the switch and swear by em.

I guess I'm one of the few that likes the Carter 2bbls. I've had very little trouble with them. They're simple and easy to fix. The Holleys I've had (and still own) have been nothing but trouble. Mostly clogged idle circuits and faulty acc. pumps. I have a '73 D200 with a 400 2bbl Holley and a '75 D300 360 2bbl. Holley and I usually have to take them apart and clean them every year. Changing/adding filters doesn't seem to help. All it takes is the smallest piece of crud you can hardly see to make one act up. I've had Carters that worked fine with 1/2" of sediment in the bottom. Oh, and I've gotten better mileage out of the Carters also......

I had several of these when they were new. No icing issues, the accelerator pumps sucked and were poorly designed. When you hit the throttle, due to lack of gas from the pump, you would get a back fire then a stall. There were lawsuits involved, it was a big deal.

But I also agree with you that the electronic ignition was part of the problem, as the electronics had just not evolved far enough at the time to be reliable.

I had the Carter 1920 on my duel manifold. I looked at Webbers but needed the Offy adapter. Looked high and low but couldn't find any
