I have a E body 8 3/4 housing I have shortened to A body size. I have now come to the Axles. I am sure you cant cut down a E body axle as under the spline there is about 1.5 inches of taper before it gets wider again and the A body length falls right in that tapered area. Am I correct in thinking that the only soloution is new axles?.

New axles are the best solution . Not enough cost saving to justify resplining old stock axles.

The only axles long enough are station wagon, B? or C? and later truck axles. Then you have to make sure the are not tapered. You need 28" to fit original A body housings and less for custom, A body "same track" width. Only have a professional cut and respline them, I've thrown 3 away after a local machine shop did the job for me. Had Moser do a pair and good to go.

Check with Dutchman axles, seem to have reasonable prices. I'm gonna be ordering from them in the next week or so I hope.

Yup, E-body axles won't work. The ones that will have been covered, C body and trucks mostly (but not even all of them!).

So much easier to just order a new set from Cass @DoctorDiff. For $300 you get a nice new set of of axles that are much stronger than the originals ever were. After you've located a set of axles you can cut and re-spline and shipped them back and forth to Moser it's really not that much more money for new ones.
