I am finishing up a 5.9 swap in my stock 74 dart. It will be a street car that I will drag race when I can (about 5-8 times a summer). By stock I mean everything is stock but the swapped in 5.9 magnum. It has the air gap intake on it and a 750 willys 4 barrel carb. 2.90 gears and a stock 904 trans with a small stall convertor in it. What do you think it will run in a 1/8th or even a 1/4? For those of you who have drag raced your magnum swaps what kind of times do they run? I am looking at bolting in a sure grip but wanted to put in a set of 3.55 gears too. Swapping in the gears though scares me a bit because of having to set them up.

Yep it is stock at the moment. I plan on upgrading to eq heads and a cam some time in the future but I am going to run it as is at the moment

Local guy has 5.9 truck engines in his 65 Val and 65 Dart with carbs.
Val runs mid 12s and milder Dart is low 14s. Definitely a low rpm engine as is. All over by 4500-5000. His best times are with 3.23 gears. Even 3.55 was a bit much.

My son has a 98 Dakota R/T. Factory 3.91sure grip. He has it down to 13.7 on drag radials with bolt ons like headers, MP intake, bigger throttle body, PCM. It's a 4000 lb truck.

I won't run it past 5gs right now. If I pop the engine I don't care. I have 3 magnum engines so if it blows I put another in lol. I will upgrade to different heads like stated before but right now the money isn't there.

What gears should I put in the rear end? I want to drive it on the street still but will be street strip like stated before. I was thinking 3.55 just so I have low end but still streetable. Would you leave the 2.90s in it and just put the sure grip in? I don't want to make it so it is over revved all the time.

If you are going to run smaller tires then the 2.93 will be good (about 25").Bigger tires will need lower gears.

Lol, why so many mag engines? I've seen em sprayed with 150 shot on junkyard pulls and stay together. But that's awesome! I just picked up a spare as well. I'd say a sure grip and 3.55s if you don't wanna be disappointed. You can get a .500 lift cam in there with stock heads, but not much more. I put a .512 lift in mine. Had just enough clearance.
