Zac_F71's 71 Demon

Get ready for a HUGE update! LOL! The hood - fits great. The hinge mounts were over 1" off on the driver side though, so we made aluminum brackets to make up for it. I can post the if you guys want to see how we fixed it but I'll have to find them in one of my MANY Facebook posts LOL. Only had to drill 1 hole on the hinge..

Bought a new QFT 750 carb, Turbo Action Cheetah shifter, finished the dash, wired the new Autometer gauges, fixed/finished the hood, installed new intake gaskets, new rear main seals, and installed the Summit deep trans pan.

Still have yet to fire it though with the intake gaskets, and carb. Waiting on the shifter from Summit Racing as I ordered the one for a RMV only and I have a stock trans so just sent it back Wednesday to exchange it for the other shifter that works with a forward or reverse valvebody.

PICS!

How I parked it after the first drive (video and burn out)

Pulling it back out for the 25th time to replace the rear main seals

Well in a strange miracle I managed to find a replacement Hurst shifter cable locally (drove 7 hours round trip in 1 day to get it). Got it installed in time to make it down to Wisconsin for my vacation for Street Machaine Nats car show. Had a fellow come out and look at the Demon carb as we couldn't get it to idle very well. Drove the car once in my friends neighborhood, but never made it to the show with the car sadly..

Loaded up and ready to go!

Short vid of the only time in the 4 day weekend we got it to idle..

Bought a new carb that Friday of the show weekend, and it had a piece of the linkage milled off, so I couldn't hook up the Lokar kick down cable. We let it sit for the rest of the weekend sadly.

Got it home, and exchanged the carb for the Quickfuel 750 it has from the Carb Shop in Maplewood MN. and haven't really been working on it lately, just a little here and there..

Got the hood delivered to my work, was $672 shipped

Measurements of how far off from one side to the other it is

Fixed and mounted! Just gotta make a prop rod!

Start of replacing intake gaskets

All clean

Laid a bead of silicone over the valley pan sides to seal it to the heads (was also leaking - found a pond of oil in the dent of the plate)

All done! New carb mounted up!

Found out the underside of the scoop just barely rubs the air filter, so I plan on having my works's body shop cut the relief for the air filter, and cut the scoops out, and finally paint it..

I bought a 6ft piece of 1/4" steel rod to make the prop rod. (woulda got aluminum but they didn't have any long enough) I then started bending it up to match the contour of the hood latch panel in front of the core support. Once it was bent into shape, and a mount, and latch for when it's down was made. I painted it all in the factory color..

The last thing I did to the car.. put the pin finishing plates in the hood.. this was the better part of a month ago as the Hood showed up to work while I was down in Wisconsin messing around with the car!

Is it a carb issue or a fuel pump issue? That much oil, if it was a stock pan, may be the fuel pump is shot and pushing gas into the oil. In turn, if you used the same fuel pump, it may be causing you cab issue. You may already checked all of that, just my 2 cents to try and help you out.

Nope it didn't smell like fuel, BUT it is a cheap eBay fuel pump.. the rear main seals were throwing oil badly, even on the dyno so I added 1qt of break in oil I had left to make up for it. I only run 6qts in a 8qt pan (Milodon) and it doesn't leak anymore.

The carb issue I think is the Demon carb's base plate, the throttle blades have a little bit of play and is causing a intermittent vacuum leak. Even on the dyno it was giving us problems, but would idle at 900rpm.. I don't care anymore though it will likely be for sale as I don't want to deal with used carbs anymore.. I'll just save up and buy a new one like I did

Got the correct shifter so hopefully I can get the Hurst out tonight and install it! Also got a step drill bit to drill the driverside valve cover for a PCV valve. Then hopefully it will stop pushing oil out the 1 breather! Pics tomorrow!

you know you could use lighter springs like off a mid 80's-mid 90's Dodge Daytona and ditch the prop rod. They work real nice on fiberglass hoods.

Such an awesome build man!
Hello Zac. The Demon is coming along nicely man! If your rear main seal leaks again, purchase a one piece from fastfish.com. I had my motor out 3 times and finally installed their one piece. No leaks, I mean bone dry after 500 miles of street driving and several passes at the drag strip. I highly recommend this seal. Yes, it is pricey but well worth the expense.

Nope it doesn't leak a drop now! Thanks guys sadly I haven't touched the car in 4 months or so.. finished the intake gaskets and such and has been on jack stands since.. I am trying to find ways to get back into the car and working on it.. I just bought some H4 conversion headlights with conversion harnesses for it, that have green led halo's around the outside, so hopefully they will get me back into it!

Here is what needs to be done-

Mount/install Cheetah shifter
Replace neutral safety switch
Replace all 4 tie rod boots (1 ripped and fell all)
Grease front end (still haven't done that LOL)
Install subframe connectors - install carpet after
Full suspension alignment
Paint hood
Fire the motor with the new carb
Fix and weld up exhaust
Install and wire headlights/halo's
Flush trans with type F fluid to see if it will shift any harder

Well guys getting back into the swing of things!

The above list is still current.. have a case of type F atf waiting, headlights waiting, and the new plan to add to the old one LOL -

New Champion radiator
New 16"-17" electric fan for the rad
17.5"x12.75" Derale trans ATF cooler w/ -6 fittings
AN lines/fittings for ATF lines
old eBay 10" fan on trans cooler (both run on the same controller)
Wire in the halo's in the H4 housings
Put 6qts of fresh Royal Purple HPS 10/30 in it along with a new filter
Finished the PCV install as well
Start and get the car going again!
Considering a Holley blue or some other electric fuel pump as well here as I hate priming the mechanical fuel pump

I did finish 90% of the interior (have the doors left to do) - found out the drivers side seat back is broken so will probably try to fix that as well.

Looking good. You dragging her along to Mopars at the Park in Farmington this year?

Are you going to open up the scoop and let it breathe? Who made the hood?
Yes will probably pull the hood off the car here, and have my work's body shop cut the holes out/ paint it semigloss black

Edit - Unlimited Fiberglass in California made the hood

hopefully priced a cam swap/redyno and near $2,000 not including small stuff and fuel.. SO not going to happen - going to do this list of stuff above and drive the car for the summer

Parts were ordered! Also got the H4 headlights installed today, and marked the hood for sanding/repairs/cutting in prep for getting it off the car and painted at work here (satin black)

Well parts got here!

Trans drive shaft yoke, and trans inspection shield.

Hood will be done in a couple weeks as well..

Hoping to be able to start on it by the time the hood is done have a lot to do and only a month to get it all done!

Well almost a year later! LOL

My last computer (desktop was out of date) so got a new one, and have been so busy working on the car it's not funny. Haven't been able to find time to update -

Sadly I used Photobucket to host all my pics and I see they are all gone now so bare with me while I reupdate all the pics I had posted plus the new one's to come.

New update - sorry no pics with this post - they will come tomorrow or Tuesday depending on how busy/behind I am with the car here.

Starting last year -
Sold the junk FBO ignition box for an MSD Digital 6AL.
Bought and installed a brand new QFT SQ750 carb (runs MINT!)

Got the car aligned, made it to Mopars in the Park car show with it, but didn't get to drive it much due to running hot and not cooling down.

Went on vacation in Wisconsin with the car July 2017, and actually put 300 miles on the car after installing a 180* Tstat, stock crank pulley/7 blade fan, and original shroud. Raced a friends 550hp 79 Bronco, and waxed him haha. Took some retro pics of the car in the same location it had been when we bought it in 1993-94.

Went home knowing what needed to be done to the car. Had to change the cooling system AGAIN. So I came to terms with "cutting" the car up since I knew bolt in stock style parts just simply wouldn't work for the car. Sold a bunch of parts, got a Summit credit card (LOL), so the craziness began! Was just going to do the cooling system and battery relocation BUT oh well..

Ordered-
Howe Racing fox Mustang 2 row (1" tube) aluminum radiator
C body upper/lower hoses
CVF Racing aluminum water pump housing (driver outlet)
Replacement Ford Contour SVT dual electric fans

Strange chromoly 727 yoke for 1350 joint
2 Moog super strength 1350 U joints (solid)
Quoted $85 to cut/weld/balance the aluminum shaft
Dropped off my core BB A727 trans with my 3500 stall/Turbo Action reverse manual valvebody to get rebuilt
^ $1,200 to rebuild w/ alto red clutches, kolene steels, bolt in sprag, and a few other parts

Still need to get a new air filter as the 1 3/4" drop base 14x4 I have now hits the new throttle cable bracket, and might prove to be to tall to the scoop

Motor is getting torn down to get it ready to reinstall the solid roller next weekend, and redyno the motor while waiting for the new trans to come back. Hope to see 525hp from the 383 after the cam/intake install. So ya - she is all sorts of torn apart. Battery box install is 90% done, new cooling system is 75% done, and currently working on tearing the motor apart and installing the new pinion yoke to measure the new drive shaft. If all goes well the driveshaft will get dropped off Monday.

Till next time (hopefully have a little time tomorrow to transfer and post some new pics)
