I've done searches and reading of prior posts but I could use help with my specific question. My 71 Dart was originally a factory air car. I do not have any of the under hood AC parts except the heater control valve so I'm trying to set up the heater/AC box to function without the AC components. I've got the dash disassembled for cleaning and am restoring the heater/AC under dash unit. Question - can I reassemble the under dash unit without the evaporator, connect all the original vacuum hoses and diaphragms, the heater control valve, and the AC dash heater controls, and have a functioning heater/defroster?

Much thanks in advance for your help.

I wouldn't see why not. It would be the same as having a complete system without a charged AC or the compressor doesn't run for some other reason. The heat would still work in all its settings. Others may correct me if I'm wrong. Although I would block the evaporator holes in the firewall, u may have an air leak there.

I think you can . However, the dash controls (vacuum) are not needed because they have nothing to control . The heat /defrost control lever can still function normally as it is mechanical . the fan switch should still operate because it is electrical . Be certain the vacuum A/C controls are eliminated or blocked because it could be a source of a vacuum leak that will effect engine function . As you may be aware the A/C box weight is 48 pounds but unfortunately a non-A/C box will not interchange as the firewalls are different . My Scamp was A/C and along with the condenser, expansion valve, compressor and brackets I saved almost 100 pounds . (I weighed the stuff) Later on I will install a heater/defrost . We are here to help . Good luck

The vacuum control would still be needed too select heater vs defrost. That is vacuum actuated, not mechanical. I did this very thing on my 68 Dart. I just cut the AC portion of the box off and chucked it. Saved a ton of weight too. I left the majority of the actuators so the cabin fresh air door, defrost and heater hose valve still operate as intended with vacuum.

You guys are a huge help. This type of question just creates blank stares at my local repair shops. Thank you.
