Hey all! Dropping the motor and trans in my 68 barracuda this weekend and need some opinions for shorty headers with clearing the stock z bar. Manual steering and stock starter. I currently have long tubes which I know will not clear but even if they did, I'd still want shortys. Hate dealing with installing long tubes. So what shortys can I use?! I have been liking through all the forums and can only find good info on clearing z bar with long tubes Seems like it should be easy Thanks!

Allow me to be the first bummer of the thread. I have never heard one good thing about shorty headers at any time or anywhere. If you're not finding anything on the web, there's probably a good reason. Somewhere here in the exhaust forum there was a write up on shorty installation with detailed pictures. It certainly looked like more trouble than it was worth and probably gained nothing over manifolds at the end of the day.

TTI has shorty headers now. I've got their long tubes and they aren't going to work. I'm going to end up getting their shorty's. They sell headpipes separately that will bolt up to their complete exhaust systems. They have installation instructions on their website so you can see if there will be clearance issues with that style. If there is a clearance issue with the z-bar, I seem to remember seeing that they sell a modified one to clear certain applications.

On my project, the long tubes hang a little too low and interfere with the trans cooler lines. They also interfere with how I want to route my aftermarket shifter cable.

Curious, so a z-bar is for ones clutch linkage, sounds like you have an auto.

I have an auto. The OP has a stick. TTI's website should say if you have to modify the z-bar for shorty header fitment.

I know I don't have one. I'm trying to help the person who originally posted the question.

I have a 69 barracuda 383 4spd. I bought a pair of used shorties on here. I put everything in place, block, heads, headers, z bar, bell housing. I had to mark & cut the header so I could bend & move it to clear the z bar. I then took the header off & welded it back up. It can be done. Not sure if the pictures show what I did or how they fit.

Thanks for the replies! I really don't wanna spend $500+ on ttis. I have shortys in my mustang and they seem to work well. I was hoping someone would've used hedmans or somthing that are more affordable.
