Removing my 727 TF - Quick question

Hey folks,

I'll be pulling the 727 from the Duster to replace the front seal. Also gonna replace a leaking rear main seal on the 340 (with motor still in the car). Wondering if I will need to support the motor while the transmissions out or if it's OK to let the motor mounts carry the load?

Pull the distributor so you don't break it on the firewall when the motor leans back. I would support the back of the motor from the top somehow.

Good call on pulling the dist... :thumbsup:


Or cut a piece of 2x4 or 4x4 to support the back of the engine while the trans is out...

Make sure it doesn't interfere with pulling the oil pan....

However, this would be easier to do if he pulled the engine and trans together and did the rear main seal out of the car...

Exhaust pipe can limit motor travel too. If/when exhaust is disconnected the motor might pivot far enough for dist' to hit firewall or fan to hit shroud. All varies with what engine, which style motor mounts, etc...
Do yourself a favor and replace the selector shaft seal also while the trans is out. My selector shaft seal was first to leak. A chore to replace under the car. I've put off that front seal renew for 3 years now ( it started leaking a few months later ). These seals usually are all the same age.
 
I just pulled my 727 off my 360 2 days ago. Didnt have to support the motor at all. It has the pancake style mounts and they are solid so idk if that makes a difference. Make sure the front of the car is high enough. When me and a friend went to slide the trans out we ended up having to lift it off the jack onto the floor while under the car. That trans is not light when your laying on your back

Moparnokar - I have the motor mounts with the rubber isolators sandwiched between the metal plates. Guessing that's the pancake type?

Getting the car up won't be a problem as I recently picked up a midlevel lift that'll give me a couple feet to play with.

of course you're going to do what you're going to do - but I agree with Karl here - yank it all, fix it all - too many things in the way underneath to make doing the rear main easier/better with the engine in the car... screw that. You're already taking a lot of it apart anyway, yank the engine!
 
Update:

Here's how I spent Father's Day Morning..... Took about 2 1/2 hours. Actually everything came out pretty smoothly considering I did it solo. Though I must admit, the transmission seems a whole lot heavier than they did when I was a kid dropping them in the driveway with a floor jack and blocks of wood! LOL

U will need a converter as the hub is worn. U will need to take the pump out and put in a new bushing as well as the seal.the pump will. Red to come apart. Kim
