The lock in my 73 doesn't stay in the column, it's just pulls out. Is there a way to get it to lock in place? Could it be missing a retaining clip or ring?

The little spring loaded detent button should pop into a hole in the column and lock it in place.

If you look at the 1st picture it has the button, shouldnt it just lock into place when it's but in the hole or am I missing something?

Like your photo, that would be the middle of 3 sections. The top section of the column has to be pulled/removed to gain full access to it. What's the story on your lock cylinder - was it missing?

Scroll down this page: 1971 dart replacing igniton need help!! Read the section on Lock Housing from the factory service manual.

No I just bought the car and it was like that. I believe it's a new lock cylinder because it was keyed different and the keys were new. I just had it re-keyed to match tge doors so I would to keep it

You should be able to look in the opening on your column and see the small hole. Shouldn't need to take anything apart - unless someone broke it inside.

Thanks for your help, I'll take another look at it tomorrow

There are a couple of styles of lock assemblies. One has a button like the pics. The other style has a has a thin metal strip that is spring loaded and pops into a slot.

what year is your column?the 70 didn't use the pop up pin,it used the other shown in one of the replies so your's probably doesn't have the hole for the pin.just a thought.

The column has the lever you have to rotate to lock it that I've seen in other 73's but I don’t know if that was in earlier years as well? This is in a Challenger by the way not an A body, but I wouldn't think that would make much of a difference.

Looks like my column has a slot instead of a hole so I guess I need the other type, dam and I just got this one re keyed!

I think the key assembly that you just had rekeyed can be swapped. I am not positive though.

Well, I tried that and when I pulled in apart pins flew everywhere! I don’t think there's a way take it out as an assembly to swap them out as a unit. I could be wrong.
