Always remember to fully tighten your lug nuts

Just a cautionary tale...
I finished swapping in an 8 1/4 into my duster just in time for a quick trip to the Pinacles National park last week. About half an hour out on a busy highway the car started shaking violently and making a horrible driveline noise. No where safe to stop so we limped to the nearest less sketchy place only to find one loose lug nut holding on the left rear wheel. Fortunately it held long enough and we didn't wreck. I was able to borrow some nuts from the other wheels and make it to an O'riles. Now i'm paranoid, which is a good thing I guess. Also I got to test out the jack, which looked super sketchy but worked.

Doesn't look like you have a lot of thread engagement happening there. Keep close a eye on them.
 
The uni-lug can be a pain. Torque them, the check a day or two later. Usually after that they stay put.
 
are you sure you have the correct lug nuts on those wheels? I believe those wheels require a longish threaded tubular shank(which goes thru the lug stud hole in the wheel) with a washer and a shoulder. If you don't have, at the very least, 1/2" of engaged thread, you need to install longer studs.
 
You were lucky, a friend of mine lost a wheel at Summit Point. Big hurry to get on the track. Torque to spec in a star pattern then all around. Never hurry, it doesn't matter what you have if a wheel comes off at any speed.

yeah, they're the shank ones. I must have been distracted buttoning up the left wheel, everything else was fine. Looking back I remember hearing one of the studs bash the body of the car somewhere on its way out. got lucky this time just need to be more paranoid next time.
 
I guess a lot of people have never seen that style wheel and lugnut setup.
Common as could be in the 70's.
 
Yea, I changed a flat during a party at my parents house. Later my brother was driving the same pickup and had a wheel come off and pass him by. Guilty me.
 
I will add, make sure you have cotter pins in all your suspension castle nuts....especially if someone else has worked on your car. Losing a tie-rod is just as bad.
