Hi Guys,

Pops and I are arguing about which fuel pump to consider with mostly street driving and a couple times a year going to the track- 69 Valiant 340 block stroked 525 HP/497 Ft Lbs on motor.

Do we go Mech high performance pump or electric? what kind?

Or do I go electric and piggy back off of the Mech pump just in case?

Thoughts?

Jason

i used a carter street strip mechanical on a 583 hp small block

Pops here....glad to see you asked for advice here son!
Even though you'll only race it occasionally, it will be in 95* heat (think Mopar Nats last year) and fuel under the hood is getting a tad warm. You'll only run it lean once so I think electric is good insurance.

While my currently running 360 is mostly stock, it is a Magnum engine without a pump boss, so, I am using an Edelbrock electric pump with the factory return line. This will keep the pump from working harder and fuel cool.

Today's electric pumps are very reliable and long lasting. The Edelbrock is quite as well.

Ether way you go, I think will be OK. The only thing I have seen about making use of both types of pumps at the same time is the warning that IF the electric pump fails, the mechanical pump should still be able to draw fuel past the electric pump. What electric pump can have fuel drawn through fit if it is not working is beyond me.

This was a very old writing from the early days.
