Disc ideas

ssbc conversion from 10'' drums to there disc set up widens the track of the front . and 14'' steel rims would not go over the alloy alum calipers , mag 14x7 us indy's just clear , but the weight must be placed in the right place . did a 71 duster , found out the hard way on tires , had to buy some smaller ones to get them to clear the set up and glass fenders . rotor came in 4'' n 4.5'' bc View attachment 1715038363

14" wheels? Nice 340. My Cuda is a 318/904. Dunno what I'm gonna do. Thought about 451,360,360 with a blower. Not sure yet. Just got it.

you need great brakes on all three of those , remember hp n better brakes must equal each other . and you can get that 318 sing with the right parts .

Yea I know the 318 can be made to sing now. I never had any trouble stopping at high speed with a 440 and my drums,,,but I'm older and wiser??now. That's why I'm doing discs. I was a dumb kid...

me two , aged to a diamond , lol . still a lot of coal left although , and in the ruff . lol .

Here's the thing ( coffee talk more or less ), If drum brakes wouldn't stop cars, these classic cars wouldn't be here today. Huge dump trucks, elevator cars, you name it, drum brakes stop it.
The main advantage of disc brakes is straight line braking.
Fewer moving parts = more reliable plus cheaper to build and maintain. Thus they eventually became standard at all 4 wheels.
So long as replacement drums and other parts remain available and the brakes are maintained... we stop. Disc brakes is a upgrade any way you slice it but upgrades aren't always required. More often desired.
Todays disc brakes in general... antilock controlled at all 4 wheels. We only wish we could upgrade that far. A bit of trivia here... What profession took the greatest advantage of, and put the most faith in, the first generation antilock brake system? Big city taxicab drivers. Once the word got out, everybody just had to have.
Big red calipers, drilled and slotted rotors, is the eye candy factor when the wheels will provide that view like a tinnie wennie bikini. Personally... I like a tinnie weenie bikini in the right setting. However I don't like looking at those brake parts or brake dust on wheels ( dirty bikinis LOL ).
The engineers state that the Brimbo like brakes are required on their high performance models. I don't argue with them. After all, a big ol' 18.5 inch brake drum behind a 20 inch wheel would still have the drum brake short comings.
End of the cup, The very least expensive basic disc brake upgrade should provide their advantages.

Usually more material to brake Mitch with shoes too and they don't drag like discs. But I agree with you about dirty bikinis. Lol!

I hear ya man. But I'll let you know the next time I head out to one, you're welcome to tag along, probably be may sometime
Make sure I've got this right. If I use factory parts to go to bbp discs,, 73 and up. It widens the track and May or Does rub fenders. If I stay with 14's and go to discs,no rubbing and no change or little in track width..? What about adding a sway bar later? Anyone know? Sorry bout the questions. I only want to do this once.

Late model discs widens the track a little but wouldn't cause a rub unless tires are oversized. I had late model A-body LBP discs under our first 67 fish. 14 inch rallyes and 205/70-14 didn't rub. A 215 just might rub. 195 is closest to the stock 'e' polyglass tire.
There are ways to put a sway bar under there with those brakes too. I just typed all that yesterday in another thread.
The downside of late model discs to consider. You would still have 7/16 studs 5 left hand and 5 right hand small bolt pattern on the rear. Then 10 of 1/2 studs, all right hand on the large bolt pattern front. Maybe they do make lbp to sbp adapters, I have never searched those. Adapters would widen the front track even more.
Maybe carry 2 lug wrenches and 2 spares. I did for a few years when that first fish was our daily driver. The large bolt pattern rear went in eventually. My goal was large bolt pattern all around so I rolled with a mixed bag of trix for a while.
You could buy 2 of 4" to 4.5" pattern adapters ( that would widen the rear track about the same ) 5 large bolt pattern wheels, 1 lug wrench, and yer good.

Thanks! Or maybe staying sbp all around with disc's for the same would be easier. I wanted cop wheels but I have nice rallys 14" now.

My car has the factory installed A-body 8 3/4" with a 3.23:1 sure-grip (5 on 4" small bolt pattern) with 14" X 5 1/2" Rallye wheels (front and rear). So, I used the SSBC kit. Pricey? Yes! Complete? Yes! Would I use them again? Yes!

You have the same ralley son your Dart. Wanting to go to wider rear tires. Found similar rims in 14x8 at summit. Thanks for the brake info.
