question.... why are 4 spds getting a penalty? even stock?

question.... why are 4 spds getting a penalty? even stock?
Easy. There is no penalty for traction devices or DOT drag radials. Manual transmissions, with traction, can "stall" up to 4000 rpms and dump the clutch. This will bury a stock converter on hole shot every time. Plus, if it's a 4-speed, it will be lower geared than the auto.
Now, if you notice, when you start to add aftermarket converters, the auto ends up with more penalties than a stick.
Trust me on this, I've lined enough stock 318 2bbls up, auto vs stick (even 3 on the tree), and if the stick doesn't win it's due to traction, or a bad driver.

Makes sense. I was curious was all.

I will go first
1970 Plymouth Duster= 318/904 8.75 with 3.91 gears
with all the deductions i came up with 12.2, my best ET this year is a 12.25
The .8 for the heads was big one.

AWESOME!!
Your in 1st place on the chart and will stay there unless somebody beats their dial index.
Nice car, and a nice run!
I hope to make a pass this month....

318willrun....Just curious, do you put shorty-block hugger headers in the 0.4 penalty box? Also, why is the car weight 'No Driver'? Not criticizing, just asking. I think this 'Race' is awesome. Thanks!

  • First question is yes, all headers are minus .4, I didn't want to get into 1 5/8 vs 2" and all. However, no penalty for factory magnum or 340 exhaust manifolds because no way I was going to break it down by factory part numbers... LOL.
  • 2nd question is just wanted to stick with a base factory number.
  • Keep in mind, it's just a generic penalty box. For example, I'm getting dinged for worked 318 heads because I home ported them. But, I could mill them .040 and install larger valves and my penalty wouldn't change. So yes, there will be advantages for some over others.
  • The first Pass by a racer made me feel good.... His index was 12.2 and he ran exactly that!!!!! So through the process of it all, the box nailed him to the tenth! I seriously doubt it will continue to work like that, but it should be fun. Are you joining????

318willrun.....Hopefully this summer I'll be in. I saw the 12.2 pass, you nailed it! I'm watching and it'll be fun to see how it progresses. Thanks for clarifying.

Still working out a few bugs before I get to the track. As soon as I take care of 1 problem another one presents itself

You might want to know that an A500 is .3 - .4 seconds and 3-4 MPH slower then a 904. The deeper first gear does not makeup for all the internal drag inside the A500. Ask me how I know....

I've wondered about that myself. Just curious, aside from this '318 race', did you try a 904 with 3.23 or taller gears against an A500 with 3.91 or lower gears? Thanks.

In my case I swapped a A500 in place of a 904. I even had the A500 converted to non-lockup so I could reuse my 904 converter. In my case the only change to the car was the transmission itself. All the details are in this thread: performance 904 vs. A500 (42RH)

Got rid of the snow a few weeks ago..... only to move into the rain :(
I'll get down to make a pass..... yet :steering:
wait! it's only April...

I might be making a pass before you at this rate. I have to see if weather is going to let us race weekend after this next. After all that I'll hopefully make the switch...

Made it down.... and came up 3 tenths short... LOL. No test-n-tune, so I had to enter trophy. 14.95 at almost 95 mph.

So far looks like my dial is gonna be 12.90 but haven't weighed car yet. It's a bit portly so maybe I'll get back a tenth or two.
Best pass yesterday. It was an unprepped track and traction was nonexistent as shown by 60' times. Total smoke show.

Awesome! Glad you made it out! Make a post of your car, we'd like to hear more of your build, and your dial index. I know you posted 12.90, but you hadn't weighed your car.

We might not get as close to 65Vsingnet's 12.25 on a. 12.2, but if there was a .8 addition for the sexiest 318 :p ???

Hoping to start at least putting the motor and tranny in the car this next weekend.

2 weeks ago i had a new best of 12.23 @ 108, i have been adjusting the jetting, and did go 109mph last week.

My combo is pump gas motor with Edelbrock heads, RPM intake, do not know the cam specs, i believe the carb is a 750.
