Speedometer Lube

Speedometer cables are not supposed to have any type of grease. The correct type lube is dry graphite powder.

Any type of grease will gum up and cause problems later on down the road, because it will overheat eventually. Speedometers cables rotate very fast and will overheat grease and break it down over time. Graphite powder will not.

Agree. What I used on my old 71 years ago. Also used WD-40 to get it down into the cable housing. Used the graphite as what is used for locks. Getting to the cable housing is the biggest part of the task.
 
From the FSM:

SPEEDOMETER CABLE


To service a noisy speedometer cable, disconnect

housing at speedometer head. Remove shaft and clean

it thoroughly. Apply a very thin film of speedometer

cable lubricant on the shaft. Such a lubricant is available

under Part Number 1243632, Speedometer Cable


Lubricant. Wipe excess lubricant from the top one foot of cable and ferrule.

FYI the lubricant specified is Lubriplate ( White Litium Grease)
 
So I put the lube where it goes into the speedo housing and I also used it on all the little gears and such.

Been about 8 years now. No issues, and I had some real problems. The needle would bounce and the gears would tick. There was grease on the gears from the factory but it was all dried out.

I drive my car what I think is a lot. I have put about 48 thousand on it over 30 years. That's also including 10 deployments which equals about 7 years of being gone. So figure 23 years total. Minimal in winter, about 2-3 thousand miles a year 600 round trip to Carlisle every year that I could go.

Yeah I'm anal on numbers.

I cleaned all the componenets in mine, and used weed eater cable lubricant. no worn parts to be seen, and it still bounces about 5 mph.
 
I used John Deere corn planter dry graphite to lube the cable . It worked well and no noise. It should be available at all John Deere dealers.
