Hello people of the internet, newbie here with a small problem...All started when I washed the car (recently purchased a 70 duster 340), noticed water in the trunk.I traced the leak to a 47 yr old window gasket(can you say dry), so got the ol classic industries cat. ordered a gasket , locking strip and some acoustic sealer(butyl)... Then came the fight(rope guwey fingers gasket on widow/car arguments wrong helper)ended up putting gasket on car with butyl and got the window in with a rope , lots a soap , lots of love and the right helper(Thanks Kev.).Now the part of the gasket that mimics a moulding tween glass and headliner is all wavy and its ugly! I don t think I messed up installing it(ex:When I got the gasket all rolled up in the bag I put it on the car and noticed the waves but figured glass and locking strip would stretch it into place , well it didn t).

Now every one knows I have an ugly gasket in my car , here is my question...

Has anyone ever encountered this? Is there a simple trick to <iron> this out?

I am afraid to use a heat gun and perhaps make it worse!

Any and all help / leads will be welcome...

Thanks in advance.

I've been told that letting them sit in the sun for a few hours before installation makes them more pliable. I doubt a heat gun would hurt it unless you leave it in one place for too long. Being that it's rubber, it won't melt. It will burn, but will not melt.

Thank you Pauly , that was a fast reply. I will wait and colect more data on this , I ve got at least a month before it gets nice enough to drive the car. Also the waves to me indicate that the rubber is too long , now is the heat going to shrink the rubber(like shrink wrap tube for wires) or is it going to make it longer(hence worse)???Usually heat causes expansion!

So far 2 people locally have told me the gasket I used is the problem , it is a white green bag with mopar authentic restoration product label on it , for those who are interested the heat gun makes it worse , it just makes the rubber really soft and droop down more , just letting it sit seems to be getting better overall after a few days , i ve taped up lower sections of the wave to encourage it to stay up but will change the tape every 24hrs(leaving masking tape after a few days the glue seperates and is very hard to clean off , sometimes the tape doesnt even come off clean , it just rips and then the glue needs heavy rubbing with solvents like brake cleaner) , doing so to a headliner would be a pita , not to mention the ensuing damage to the headliner...

Mine looked straight/flat before install, but got wavey when I put it in.. It did flatten a little since install, but a few years now and some of it is still messed up. :(

now see... this might be a good reason to install the glass at top first like the manual says, especially when doing rope tricks. I can imagine the rope pulling any slack available to the finish line. The bottom line of the gasket is much more ridged. I personally do install glass from bottom up like most everyone else, but then I don't use a rope. My gasket is placed and pretty well adhered to the body before the glass goes in it.

I put that gasket on the metal frame and set glass in bottom first. No rope. So maybe...

took that jig off this morning and it looks great now the pass side is being done i will post pics when all done , I wanted to post pics of the mouldings you ll see before and after buffing. I used stainless screws from the boat supply store and I buffed the heads as well . And a pic of the brand of gasket I used.(see sticker added to it)???
