We are trying to install Dougs headers 453 on my buddies 73 Duster with a 360/727. We are having issues clearing the big square collar on the steering column. What have you guys done to take care of this issue? From what we see denting the tube significantly or different steering shaft setup. We have been struggling with this for some time now and are now in crunch time. Mopars in the Park in Farmington, MN is right around the corner. LOL

Any tips, pics, or moral support is appreciated!!!

73 up spool type k frames are the worst, as far as the motor mounts sagging...I would be looking at the mounts FIRST

I don't think he has the spool type mounts. His are rectangular, have a stud out each side, and the rubber in the middle of the plates. Sorry for limited knowledge. We both have some knowledge but are definitely learning and getting our butts kicked in the process.

Oh ok, that's the 72 down biscuit type then, it's common to shim the mounts to gain clearance on those

Ok, That was our next step. Seemed like we might be able to gain some ground doing that. Thanks for the tips and info!!

I'm in the same situation right know with my 69. The giant rectangle end hits the last tube as it drop down. I can't even get it on the box without the column attached. Some have suggested shimming the box to angle it over, pull the header, dent the tube, or use a universal joint. We'll I didn't like any of those. Shimming just adds load via more off angle. Pulling the header adds tension on it so sealing could be an issue along with loading welds and such. A universal alone removes the slip function of the stock coupler. Some have cut and welded a slider to the stock shaft and added a universal. I didn't want to do that either, call me lazy. So after bugging the crap out of Flaming River's tech department, I found out the 66-69 drop in B-body tilt column will drop in an A body (they have a 70-up A column too). So I order an unpainted one, it comes with a 1.75" slip built in and a universal coupler that is a bit shorter and is round so it should clear the header. I was considering a tilt so this nudged me in that direction. Enter the slippery slop, the column was $550, the floor plate is $100 and it requires an aftermarket steering wheel. I think stock wheels will fit if you grind out the indexing key on the wheel but you may have a gap between the wheel and the column.

I had the same problem with hooker header's, ended up going with headman's fit fine. I heard you can move the column over a bit also.

Sorry guys. I guess it is a 74. Please don't shun me. I do this to him all the time.

Thanks for the info guys. We had talked about getting some thinner plate steel, notching it and sliding it in to shim the mount(s). I have seen the Flaming River & Borgeson u-joints.... they are insanely priced though. Certainly not my first choice.

Move the steering column all the way over. There's quite a bit of room for movement. Then put 1/8" washers on the side of the steering box. This kicks the box at a little angle, enough for steering coupler to sneak by number 7 tube.
