OK guys, Working on a 74 Duster and rebuilding the steering column coupler. WHAT is the secret to getting the cap back into place and getting the retaining tabs bent back into place?

Patience, and lots of it! They are a bear, especially if column is still in the car.
I have had luck with a large channel lock pliers so you can "squeeze" tabs from each side at same time.
Just a suggestion.

Also, do a Google search on "Mopar Steering Shaft Coupling Clamp".
I've put this on all my cars where I've had the coupling apart.

I reused my old one and channel lock pliers like 68original said. I couldn't get the new one to fit as good.

There isn't a secret other than first doing minimal distortion to the OEM cap so it can be reinstalled.
See a recent thread for pics. That owner used wood working type bar clamps to draw the new box cap tight in place. Good luck

Well I'm definitely not impressed with the rebuild kit they are selling on e-bay as far as fit is concerned. You would think they would error on the side of caution and make them little tabs just a we bit longer. Just like displacement there is no replacement for experience, thanks guys!!! I'm getting the clamp and being done with it. The clamp looks like a very reasonable solution and should make everything reusable.

The tabs were too short on mine as well. I used the clamp as there was no way to keep everything in place otherwise.

2 c clamps and pliers
Thanks davescuda, I tried that with one clamp because I had just broke the other on something else and I wasn't patient enough to wait until I got another one. I was a little worried about the clamps flying off and banging up the paint.

Hello All, As it turns out, the little retainer clamp was the ticket!!! Like my Dad would say "It was the cats meow". Glad I double checked because I needed the 3.5 inch one.

Also be careful you don't get it 1/2 turn off or the wheel will be "upside down"

FWIW, on those retainer tabs, I've had some good results pre-bending two sides then tighten up by bending the two opposite sides.
The clip is easiest.

Definitely getting one of those clamps! Wish I knew those existed a couple months ago

67Dart273, I did double check but I'm pretty sure that mine only goes in 1 way based on the splines lining up. There is a groove that is wider on the steering box shaft and the coupler and if they are not lined up it won't go together.

true until the coupling has been separated from the shaft. This is where the master spline at steering wheel end comes into play. The coupling box can be put on the shaft 180 wrong.

It can only go on one way just make sure your wheels are straight

He was talking about the coupler body onto the column shaft
