Look at the nations that practiced that and other pagan things like it, even the Jews. The Aztecs are a classic example of a people who practiced that abomination (and others) and they were pretty much wiped out of existence.
Same with the mixed multitude who came out of Egypt. Not a SINGLE one made it to the promised land (Moses got to see it, but since he smote the rock twice...coincidentally that ROCK, which gave living water to the people...represented CHRIST...see how it fits??? he didn't get to go into the promised land) made it. They dropped in the wilderness. I can cite many examples of people who were at a minimum severely punished for gross transgressions like making their children pass through the fire.
